Happy World Sea Turtle Day from the National Trust for the Cayman Islands. As an organization whose mission is to protect and preserve Cayman’s natural and cultural heritage there may be no better symbol of both than sea turtles. Sea turtles have been a major part of the culture of these islands since before they were even Cayman. Turtle meat was a main source of sustenance and economic growth from the first discovery of the islands. Unfortunately, sea turtle life histories make their populations vulnerable to overhunting and they almost disappeared from our waters and shores. However, the people of the Cayman Islands recognized that there was a problem and have been working for decades to rebuild our turtle populations to the point where we can all now enjoy seeing our three sea turtle species on all three islands. Turtles are truly international creatures, they connect us to far away places. Like the sailors of days past, they can range across whole oceans during their lives, returning to their birthplaces to create the next generation. Their protection is therefore a shared responsibility of all people who encounter them worldwide. They still face threats from climate change, development, plastic pollution, poaching, and more but together we can ensure their future. The National Trust for the Cayman Islands is proud to protect turtle nesting habitats on Little Cayman and Cayman Brac with the goal that future generations will be able to experience these amazing creatures. Please join us and so many other great organizations in the efforts to protect this national symbol. #worldseaturtleday #nationaltrust #cayman #seaturtle #islandlife #conservation

Happy World Oceans Day! The history of the Cayman Islands is largely a story of a people living off the ocean, evident to all of those who read the national motto: “he hath founded it upon the sea”. The food the ocean provided nourished the people for hundreds of years, the economic opportunities came at sea, the tourism industry was born largely from the attraction to Cayman’s amazing reefs and marine wildlife. It is simply impossible to tell the story of Cayman without centering on the ocean. Today our oceans provide us with recreation and economic opportunities, food, mental health benefits, and so much more. But we all need to do our part to keep our oceans healthy and accessible to all. Access to the ocean is thankfully a right for all in the Cayman Islands, but our coastlines are changing fast. The National Trust for the Cayman Islands is proud to safeguard coastline from development on all three islands to ensure that easy access to the ocean will always be there for the enjoyment of the people of Cayman. Visit our sites pictured above like Sylvia’s Reef, Dr. Roy’s Ironshore , Heritage Beach, Preston Bay, and Herrman’s Beach to access all the benefits that our oceans provide us. Join and support the National Trust today to help us do even more to protect Cayman’s natural and cultural heritage.

The National Trust for the Cayman Islands team is filled with animal lovers. That is why we are in support of the important message of @caymanhumane regarding responsible pet ownership. Letting our pets roam outdoors was a long held tradition in many cultures, but the reality of the situation is that it is safer for all animals if pets are kept contained. Due to their higher exposure to the dangers of road strikes, getting lost, attacks from feral and domestic animals, unfriendly people, heat and other environmental dangers like poisons, disease, parasites, and more, outdoor cats have a significantly shorter life expectancy than indoor cats (2-5 years vs 10-15 years). Keeping pets contained also benefits our native wildlife, cats and dogs are carnivores and unfortunately do harm our native species even when they are well fed. The National Trust for the Cayman Islands wants our home to be a safe place for all animals and everyone who owns a pet can do their part by keeping your pets contained or under your control at all times. We realize that this is a big change for many people, but there are steps you can take to begin the process like reducing your animal’s outdoor time, leash training, building a Catio, and more. Please be on the look out for more information on how to be a more responsible pet owner to come from the National Trust and the Humane Society.
