Last evening, the Parliament Building was lit “UN Blue” to observe the 78th Anniversary of the United Nations (UN). Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kerrie Symmonds, who was in attendance, pointed out that the UN is one of Barbados’ most valued partnerships, and it is on this date every year that Barbados joins the rest of the Caribbean Community in celebrating UN Day. He said the day serves as a reminder and a renewal of the commitment made on October 24, 1945, “to unstintingly pursue the ideal of international peace and security”. Minister Symmonds noted that since Barbados joined the UN on December 9, 1966, it has remained steadfast in its commitment to upholding the principles underpinning the United Nations Charter.  He thanked the UN for its contribution to the island’s development over the years and expressed the hope that the partnership would continue for generations to come. “Barbados acknowledges the indelible contribution made by the UN system towards advancing the interests of all the global public goods for the small island developing states (SIDS)…. Multilateralism is an important bulwark in the execution of our foreign policy, both in terms of the pursuit of sustainable development and in terms of the safeguarding of our sovereignty,” the Foreign Affairs Minister stated. Despite the positives achieved over the years through multilateralism cooperation, Minister Symmonds has called for a reform of some UN systems, in particular its Security Council.  Continue reading on our website at www.gisbarbados.gov.bb 📸 C.Pitt/BGIS

The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment has been honoured for the assistance it gave in helping Barbados’ bodybuilding team to succeed at the Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC). During a recent ceremony at the Ministry’s headquarters, Haggatt Hall, St. Michael, President of the Barbados Amateur Body Building and Fitness Federation (BABBFF), Dr. Alfred Sparman, thanked Minister Charles Griffith and Director of the National Sports Council, Neil Murrell, and presented them with a plaque and medal, respectively, for their support.  Acknowledging that the support given was seen “in the morale of the athletes and the executive”, Dr. Sparman stated: “We want to thank you for what you’ve done for bodybuilding and to sports in general in this country, without you we couldn’t be where we are today.” In accepting the award, Minster Griffith said: “My work in this chair is never going to be about that. That is an add-on and I thank you for recognising the work, but there’s a team that I’m functioning with here at the Ministry.” He noted that “bodybuilding is one of those sports that kept Barbados on the map for many years”, and reiterated the need for certified officials and trainers to accompany the athletes at competitions and for the revival of bodybuilding in schools. More than one heart attack a day. That’s the number of cardiac episodes recorded in Barbados in 2021. This translated to 467 heart attacks that year, over half of which were fatal. Additionally, 691 strokes were recorded in 2021, and 150 of those persons died. These figures were shared by Minister of Heath and Wellness, Senator Dr. The Most Honourable Jerome Walcott, who delivered the feature address at the launch of the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados’ mass media campaign “The Right to Information – Give Us Warning Labels” this morning, at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Two Mile Hill, St. Michael. It advocates the need for front of package warning labels (FOPWL) on food items, showing the salt, fat, and sugar content, so consumers can make informed decisions when shopping. Minister Walcott told those attending the launch that Barbados bears one of the highest burdens of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) per capita, with obesity and its associated risk factors being major contributors. He added that today’s launch was a call to action that “we cannot afford to ignore”. “The Heart and Stroke Foundation recently utilised CADRES to conduct … an opinion poll, and it revealed that an overwhelming 75 per cent of Barbadians are in favour of the Government adopting the initiative of front of package warning labelling. This apparent endorsement by the public underscores the urgency of our mission…. “Research done by The University of the West Indies, in conjunction with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), has revealed that easily understood front of package warning labels could potentially reduce NCD-related deaths in Barbados by as much as 16 per cent, which translate into tremendous reductions in pain and suffering and result in cost savings, as it relates to the treatment of NCDs,” the Health Minister stated. The Caribbean and Africa possess complementary strengths in various sectors, making them natural trading partners.  And, for successful trading and the enhancement of ties to occur, there needs to be direct airlift connectivity. This is the view of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade and Senior Minister Coordinating the Productive Sector, Kerrie Symmonds, who added that the airlift must be cost-effective to generate substantial interest. Mr. Symmonds stated this while speaking virtually today at the Barbados Coalition of Service Industries’ (BCSI) business forum panel discussion on Airlinking Prosperity: Bridging Trade and Services in The Caribbean and African Region.  He noted that, to date, Barbados had signed air services agreements with Ghana, Kenya, and Rwanda and is in the process of discussing how to actualise the airlift.  “But an air service agreement is not something you can fly on. Therefore, you need to have, obviously, the airline. But before the airline can leave the ground, there has to be some economic framework, some substance that allows for this effort to make sense, otherwise you will have … a collapse,” the Minister explained. He stressed that direct airlift between Barbados and Africa would be expensive and subsidising seats was not the ideal way. He proposed that to get started, the region should consider chartered flights; the use of technology as a tool for interconnectivity and trade, while promoting what each destination has to offer in business, services, culture, and leisure. “There is, in my judgment, tremendous mutual interests on both sides of the Atlantic, Africa and in the Caribbean in building this bridge … and there are some things which are within our grasp immediately.
