Before the Xiqu Centre and Freespace, our inaugural performing arts venues, were built, West Kowloon brought together a star creative team comprising Leon Ko, Chris Shum and Cheung Fei-fan to write an original musical. The multi-year project aimed to rethink how Cantonese musicals are produced in Hong Kong, most notably by extending the common short production cycle to include previews and allow audience feedback, as standard productions do on Broadway and in the West End. No ideas for your weekend getaway? Check out 'Female Immortals in Elysium' by Ruan Gao (who was active in the 10th century) and get some inspiration. The painting depicts joyful moments on the land of immortals. Female deities in the centre are reciting poems and playing a string instrument, while other deities are preparing for a banquet. Away from the land, some more immortals are coming over to join this girls-only gathering. The artwork is executed in a complex composition with dense brushstrokes, which were rarely found on handscrolls at that time. 'Female Immortals in Elysium' is now on view in the last rotation of the special exhibition 'The Making of Masterpieces: Chinese Painting and Calligraphy from the Palace Museum' in Gallery 8. Other highlights of the exhibition include 'Biography of Zhang Han in Running-Regular Script' (Tang copy) by Ouyang Xun (557 - 641), 'Illustrations to The Book of Songs: Songs Beginning with "Deer Call”' by Ma Hezhi (active in the 12th century), and 'Hawk on a Maple Tree Eyeing a Pheasant' by Li Di (active in the 12th century). From this Saturday, award-winning director Tsang Tsui-shan presents the film as part of an installation in #PhygitalD at #Freespace.
