Say it with us: #OnWisconsin! #UWMadison, for the first time, has topped $1.5 billion in research expenditures, ranking #8 among nearly 900 public and private universities surveyed by @nsfgov. That’s a 10% increase in expenditures over the previous fiscal year for research that addresses society’s grandest challenges and advances the Wisconsin Idea.
Students at @uwvetmed brought their skills out of the classroom and into the treatment room this summer thanks to a wildlife clinical rotation. Taught by clinicians from the Zoological Medicine service, the rotation partners with wildlife centers around the state, including @dchsgiveshelter and the @wischumane Society in Milwaukee. Students get the opportunity to see, treat and ultimately help rehabilitate animals for release back into the wild.
Current Indigenous students and alumni reflected on this year’s #UWNativeNovember theme, “Laughter is Medicine” during the annual Alumni Social. #UWMadison student Sophia Grigsby says, “To me, the theme means that our community is still here and that we’re resilient, but also that we’re healing and we’ve build a community for ourselves, amongst each other, that is positive.” The event, hosted by @indigenous.uwmadison, @ilsa.uw, @uwindigenousgrads and @uwmulticultural, was a time to connect around conversation, food and music provided by the student drum group, Twin Tails Singers. #UWNativeNovember wraps up on November 30 with a keynote from activist and performing artist Dallas Goldtooth.

Were U Wondering how autonomous vehicles work? @uwmadisoncee professor Xiaopeng Li explains what’s involved in getting a car to drive without a human behind the wheel.
Science doesn’t just happen in a laboratory. That’s especially true for our #BadgersInYellowstone, who spend time in the field, studying forests in national parks that people love. The privilege of working, eating, living and sleeping in Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks is a unique experience and one that Turner lab members Arielle Link, Timon Keller and Lucy McGuire don’t take for granted. Being in these spaces and sharing their findings with others motivates them as they hustle through days filled with surveys, site visits and data collection. But with such busy field days, it’s also important for them to take time to care for themselves. Luckily, the beautiful ecosystem they’re all driven to study and protect also provides the perfect place to recharge. The Red Gym has served many roles and, most importantly, thousands and thousands of Badgers since its doors opened in 1894. #UW175

The landscapes of Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks are loved by people around the world, but human-driven changes to climate will make for warmer, drier conditions with more fires. Monica Turner and her lab at #UWMadison have been studying the changes for decades. Meet Monica and her team, and join them as they work to research and sustain one of the world’s most beautiful ecosystems — tap our link in bio or visit go.wisc.edu/yellowstone #BadgersInYellowstone #research #forests #wildfires #climatechange #yellowstonenps
The Ho-Chunk Banners hanging on Bascom Hall in celebration of #UW175 are the fruits of a creative partnership formed by #UWMadison doctoral student and Ho-Chunk Nation member Molli Pauliot and faculty members Marianne Fairbanks and Stephen Hilyard. The banners they designed merge traditional Ho-Chunk handcrafts with cutting edge animation software to create a design that honors Ho-Chunk heritage and the technical skill of the handmade. “The title of this piece — ‘Seed by Seed’ — reminds us of the work we are doing to acknowledge that this university sits on the ancestral homeland of the Ho-Chunk people, who were forcibly removed from this place. And it reminds us of our ongoing responsibilities to move our campus community from ignorance to awareness, and that this work can’t be confined to a day, a month or even a year. It’s a work of a lifetime.” — @uwchancellor Tap our link in bio to learn more about these special banners. 📸 Jeff Miller & Bryce Richter 🎥 Stephen Hilyard & Jason Weiss
