And then I remembered the early days of our relationship, when words spilled out of us with a sense of urgency. So I looked through what we wrote to each other then, and there’s one letter in particular that feels almost prophetic: “The truth is, before you, I didn’t believe it was possible for my heart to beat faster with just the thought of a person, my breath rise to my throat, my whole body pulse like the North Star. I thought these feelings were reserved for my youth, were well behind me, replaced with logical, rational love. But as I discover more and more about you, as day after day, week after week, this amazing person unveils before me, I find your presence filling my life with an indescribable spark. You have revealed an entirely new world to me: a full-bodied experience of delight and curiosity. So brand new, that I wonder how many more rooms there are inside of me that I've yet to explore, how many doors still closed, how many people, how many worlds, and whether they would all be as beautiful as you. I’ve been sober for 90 days today. I haven’t said anything about it because I learned early on that I don’t know a damn thing about how to do this, and I certainly didn’t know what to expect. It was my 43rd birthday celebration 90 days ago that the lack of inhibition that normally worked against me while drinking, spoke up and said “I don’t want this for my life.” And I naively thought it was as simple as that. What I quickly came to realize is that I don’t know shit. All the reasons I drank in the first place were still there and coming out of the darkness, all the ways I had hurt myself and people I love were looking me squarely in the face, a new battle with shame and regret reared its ugly head, and oh my goodness the struggle to forgive myself for the mistakes I continue to make through the growing pains and stumbles along this new sober ground can be near unbearable at times. I just wanted it all to go away, but I had no idea how to even begin to cope with it all. The cycle of temptation beckons me to choose the easy path and deal with it all later, time and time again. But “later” has arrived. So I pick myself up day after day and thrust myself into an unexpected and uncharted journey of self-discovery, combing through the treasure map of my life piece by painful piece to get to the root of it all: while simultaneously developing new habits that require a total conscious effort to choose every single time; discovering and holding fast to my boundaries; re-evaluating my relationships; taking a hard and honest look at myself and who I want to be; shedding light on the confession I’ve hidden for so long; and somehow still fueling the goodness inside of me when it can be so very hard to recognize at times. This decision was supposed to be a good thing, I thought. Why does it hurt so much? Why is it all so hard? How can this all be worth it? Because nothing is worth not experiencing all of my life. And while it feels like nearly everything has changed, it’s been the most familiar coming home of sorts. Because today I celebrate my 90 day milestone, and I can humbly and lovingly bow to my past. I wholeheartedly believe in the timing of my life. Who enters it, who exits or needs to exit, the opportunities that come my way, and the things that are no longer. It doesn’t always feel good in the moment, but I truly believe that things are always working out for me. Now… I’ll also be the first to tell you that my go-to is worst-case-scenario, so it takes some talking myself off the ledge to get to the point of wisdom that I have within me. But it’s there, and it’s deeply rooted. I don’t know who needs to hear this right now, hell maybe it’s me. But, trust the timing of your life. And understand that we’re spending our lives together. We can spend our lives anywhere, with anyone, doing anything. But at the end of the day, the only true currency we have is our time. People talk about spending money, but that’s nothing. If I spend my time with you, that’s all I have. Listen, I have the gift of goodbye. I believe in goodbye. I believe in washing my hands of something or someone that’s no longer serving me, no matter the cost. NO MATTER THE COST. It’s not that I’m hateful, it’s that I’m faithful. “When a flower doesn’t bloom you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower.” Last year, @marsha_elle was given the opportunity of a lifetime to spend one month in an ashtanga yoga intensive training with her teacher and mentor, @kinoyoga. But then COVID happened, and the training was canceled. Most of you have never seen Marsha bummed, but I did, and I could see her flower wilt a little bit. You see, it’s so important to stay inspired as yoga teachers. And most of the teachers you are familiar with likely get the majority of their inspiration from their own dedicated and humble practice, from each other, or by attending their peers’ classes. But, even teachers need teachers. And when you’re the best of the best (Marsha would never say this, so I will say it for her), that next step of enlightenment and knowing can only come from your teacher. Tomorrow, Marsha is leaving to do that one month ashtanga intensive with her teacher, and I wanted to take a moment to lift up the one that regularly lifts so many of us up. The sweetest thing happened today. @erika_gvl and I were at a late lunch downtown, and two teenagers came up to us at our table. They were visibly nervous in the sweetest way possible and said, "Happy PRIDE Month!"⁠ ⁠ They could see Erika from where their table was, but my back was facing them. So when I turned around and they saw that the shirt I was wearing said "Love WINS" (thank you @judyabines), they said "YES!" and pumped their arms like they had just won something! ⁠ ⁠ Them: "We were so nervous, because we weren't sure..."⁠ Us: "Well, I hope it wouldn't matter who you say it to, because I hope everyone is celebrating PRIDE Month!" with some other pleasantries, what's your name, etc. then "Should we wish you a happy PRIDE Month too?"⁠ Them: "Yes" and they looked shy and at each other⁠ Us: "How do you know one another?"⁠ Them: "We go to church together... And there are others there like us. And it's hard."⁠ Us: "Yes, we know. And you can be both! But we see you, and you are good. And you have made our day!"⁠ ⁠ They walked away with the biggest smiles on their faces, and it made me remember that, while Erika and I are just going about our day, while ANY of us are going about our day, you never know who's watching. Who needs to see that it's possible to go about their life too. ⁠ ⁠ As our friend/son @jesssseeeeee once said to us, "It would have been so huge for me growing up if I would've seen you two together as a couple."⁠ ⁠ Visibility matters, even when it's not your intent.
