Last week, the Giving to Amplify Earth Action (GAEA) initiative was launched at the @worldeconomicforum in Davos. The initiative highlights how philanthropic funds can be used as seed funding for climate-related initiatives in the hopes of attracting investments from the private sector and governments. We at Space for Giants believe that a significant increase in public, private, and philanthropic partnerships is necessary to successfully finance nature-based solutions. To that end, our Giants Club forum works to mobilise the highest levels of leadership in the political, financial, and conservation spheres. We can only combat dangers to nature and the environment through such partnerships and practical procedures, like the new one unveiled at Davos. Please click on the link in our bio to read more about the Giving Amplify Earth Action initiative. #partnerships #wef #Davos #funding #GiantsClub #private #public #philanthropic #climatechange #environment #ecosystem #wildlife #landscapes #financial #leadership #naturebasedsolutions #investments

As we begin an exciting new year, we couldn’t be more excited about what 2023 has in store for conservation. We look forward to pursuing our mission to restore, protect and manage Africa’s critical natural ecosystems on which we all depend. Space for Giants has had momentous achievements in 2022, and we would like to share the key highlights: 1️⃣ We signed a historic co-management agreement to restore and manage Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve, an 878-square-mile ecosystem in Uganda and the country’s second-largest protected area. 2️⃣ We announced the former President of Kenya, H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta, as the Giants Club’s official Climate Change Champion. 3️⃣ Pioneered a national scale ‘smart’ solar-powered fencing project in partnership with the Gabonese government to reduce human-wildlife conflict in Gabon. We thank each of our partners and supporters for making every milestone possible!🙏 #2023 #wildlife #elephants #fences #GiantsClub #champion #milestones #grateful #partners #supporters #climatechange #Uganda #PianUpe #wildlifereserve #ecosystems #Africa #natural #landscapes #conservation

While conservation is among the noblest of pursuits, it is perpetually met with one common hurdle-a lack of sustainable funding. At the same time, companies are making net zero commitments. Achieving these requires companies to invest in emission abatement technology. However, between now and reaching their net-zero target, there will be (declining) unavoidable emissions associated with a company’s operation. To offset these, companies can buy high-quality carbon credits from nature-based solution carbon projects like those of Space for Giants. Each carbon credit represents one tonne of CO2 avoided or removed from the atmosphere. Carbon credits have become integral to Space for Giants’ financial roadmap. This was accelerated by COVID-19, which showed that tourism income alone cannot carry the cost of conservation. Other equitable forms of annuity incomes, such as carbon financing, may fit that bill. Africa’s many landscapes and ecosystems have diverse carbon sequestration potential. Working with experienced technical partners, Space for Giants is able to determine the carbon sequestration potential over multiple decades of the landscapes it aims to conserve. Look out for more details about this project in the next couple of weeks. 📸@maurice.schutgens #technology #project #sustainable #conservation #funding #environnement #landscape #fundraising #carboncredits

Tackling human-elephant conflict (HEC) across Africa is a complex challenge. While there is unquestionably a focus to find sustainable long-term solutions to HEC, there is also a very real, urgent need to alleviate the immediate suffering of rural communities that live side-by-side with elephants. Over a decade, Space for Giants has worked tremendously hard to create a safe space for both humans and elephants to coexist. This has included a series of trial and error for innovative yet effective solutions for the different landscapes in Africa. For landscapes such as Gabon- Africa’s major stronghold for critically endangered forest elephants and through the support of the @elephantcooperation, @usfws and @elephantcrisisfund, Space for Giants has trialled low-cost and low-specification mobile electric fences to help to protect farmers from crop-raiding elephants. The fences start as a simple one strand electric line with the option to add additional strands of wire if elephants break through the first line of defence. This approach suits small-scale farmers who can move, fix, and manage the deterrent fences themselves. The project has been remarkably successful and 57 crop-raiding attempts by forest elephants in seven villages have been prevented. #HEC #elephants #fences #Gabon #cropraiding #farmers #landscapes #Africa #rural #communities #conflict #wildlife #Africa #crisis #fund #coexist #mobile #electric #forestelephants #forests

Did you know that Space for Giants work is guided by geographic information system (GIS) technology to gather and interpret the data that guides the organization’s interventions? The CEO and Founder, @drmaxg initially sought to understand how elephants used space in increasingly human-dominated landscapes. “This work involved GIS from day one, to map thousands upon thousands of hourly fixes of elephant positions and human-elephant conflict incident data to understand patterns,” said @maurice.schutgens, Managing Director of Conservation at Space for Giants. Please read more about how Space for Giant's uses technology in conservation on the recently published @esrigram linked in our bio. #data #conservation #sustainability #elephants #management #sustainability #research #holistic #toolkit #coexistence #spaces #people #GIS #mapping #esri

This week, @esrigram published a feature on Space Giants: ‘Safeguarding Africa’s Protected Areas and Wildlife Using a Holistic Strategy.’ 10 years ago, Space for Giants started as an academic elephant research project looking into the coexistence of people and elephants. Today, Space for Giants is successfully developing a conservation toolkit that is now being delivered across 11 African countries and applies a holistic approach to conservation. The organization has ensured that wild spaces are protected and restored through good management, conservation investment, and adaptive innovation. #GivingTuesday is finally here! 🎉🥳 This #GivingTuesday, we wish to raise funds to help protect Africa’s landscapes from climate change and thanks to supporters like you, we believe this is possible. Climate change is demanding global attention with an urgency not seen before. We at Space for Giants are focused on creating space for hope – literally - by protecting the critical landscapes that are vital for a healthy planet. Our Giving Tuesday campaign has been inspired by the Paris Agreement commitment to protect at least 30% of the land and seas for nature by 2030. Nowhere is that more important right now than in Africa with its vast open lands and wealth of wildlife and biodiversity. According to Kenya’s Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, “Climate change is now a bigger threat to elephant conservation than poaching.” Kindly join us to make a real and lasting impact on nature for generations to come. Space for Giants protects African landscapes, wildlife and lives that depend on them. Our work supports the Paris Agreement to protect 30 per cent of the land and seas by 2030 which intends to increase coverage of effectively managed protected areas. Africa's diverse landscapes are made up of tropical rainforests, mangroves, savannas, swamps, and coral reefs. The landscapes offer a huge potential to act as carbon sinks that help absorb carbon dioxide in the atmosphere which is leading to global warming. There are currently 8,400 protected areas for nature in Africa. These areas protect wildlife as well as ecosystems at various scales as well as vital services that nature provides for people. Currently, only 10 per cent of the African protected areas are in favourable conditions. However, effective conservation and management can help preserve and prevent further biodiversity loss. According to a @unitednations report, half of the world’s GDP is dependent on nature and every dollar invested in restoration creates up to USD 30 in economic benefits. The @unitednations estimates that damage to ecosystems including forests, grasslands and coral reefs and the associated loss of biodiversity could drain USD 3 trillion from the global economy by 2050. Despite their enormous social and environmental benefits, these landscapes remain grossly undervalued and underfunded and philanthropy simply hasn’t been enough - in fact, less than seven per cent of what is really needed is being spent. The opportunity is, therefore, driven by the urgent need to restore our ecosystems to avoid substantial economic loss, climate change and reduced biodiversity. To help us restore African landscapes, we need your support in our upcoming #givingtuesday2022 campaign. Please look out for details of how you can support us in the next few days. #GivingTuesday #elephants #future #generations #people #wildlife #landscapes #climatechange #biodiversity #landscapes #protect #Africa #environment #nature #2030 #ParisAgreement #donate #support #GivingBlock #fundraising #philanthropy #crypto #giving #NFTuesday #Openseas #CryptoGivingTuesday
