The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower is a Roman Catholic historic church located on the west side of San Antonio. Arriving from Mexico in 1926, four discalced friars began serving the surrounding parish community and in 1927 was able to realize the friars dream of establishing a national shrine to newly canonized St. Thérèse de Lisieux. It is one of only 4 basilicas in Texas and it is listed on the US Register of Historic Places. The Basilica holds important religious art including a treasured painting of St. Thérèse. It also guards three first class relics, which are exposed on a weekly basis for public veneration. #Adventure #adventuretravel #adventuretime #adventurer #travelling #traveling #travellife #travelislife #traveltheworld #travelgram #texas #travelabroad #travelmore #solotravel #travel #luxurytravel #satx #sanantonio #worldtraveler #worldtravel #worldtraveller #traveltips #beautifulplaces #religioustravel

In 1912 the San Antonio Dramatist Club was founded and resides in the oldest municipally built theatre in South Texas. The facade of the theatre is a faithful replication of the former Old Market House which had been razed in 1925. The architects reproduced the original facade of the Old Market House with the broken pieces of stone from the original by calculating the dimensions of the broken pieces and by consulting old photographs. In 1927 the group officially incorporated as San Antonio Little Theater, or SALT. They are the longest running theatre in San Antonio and offer professional theatre productions and classes to this day. The playhouse is located in San Pedro Springs Park, the oldest Park in Texas and one of these oldest in the USA. #Adventure #adventuretravel #adventuretime #adventurer #travelling #traveling #travellife #travelislife #traveltheworld #travelgram #texas #travelabroad #travelmore #solotravel #travel #collegetravel #luxurytravel #satx #sanantonio #worldtraveler #worldtravel #worldtraveller #traveltips #theater

Sebastian, the renown sculptor who created San Antonio's iconic "Antorcha de Amistad", was asked by the City of San Antonio to come and do some maintenance work on the downtown landmark. When he came, he had a gift ready for the city. Located at the San Pedro roundabout next to Fox Tech Highschool and a block from the downtown library lives "The Door of Equality" The sculpture is roughly 37 feet tall including the base. From the north there is an inscription that reads "equality" and from the south "igualidad" He gifted the sculpture to the city to show his love and appreciation for San Antonio's embrace of him and other Mexican artists. #Adventure #adventuretravel #adventuretime #adventurer #travelling #traveling #travellife #travelislife #traveltheworld #travelgram #texas #travelabroad #travelmore #solotravel #travel #collegetravel #luxurytravel #satx #sanantonio #worldtraveler #worldtravel #worldtraveller #traveltips #beautifulplaces

The Aztec Theatre in San Antonio officially opened in June 4th, 1926 as one of the most decorative theaters in the country. It is an impressive example of the exotic themed motion picture palaces that were built during the economic boom of the 1920s. Designed in a Meso-American theme, the theatre exudes luxury featuring a 3-ton chandelier over 12ft wide in the lobby, the largest in Texas at the time of installation. It has since been completely restored. Fun fact: The chandelier was installed the same day of the ill fated stick market crash of 1929. The theatre is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as well as in Patricia Schultz's book, "1000 places to see before you die" Currently the theatre is used as a concert venue and multi-purpose event center. Check it out to see some great touring and national acts today! #Adventure #adventuretravel #adventuretime #adventurer #travelling #traveling #travellife #travelislife #traveltheworld #travelgram #texas #travelabroad #travelmore #solotravel #travel #collegetravel #luxurytravel #satx #sanantonio #worldtraveler #worldtravel #worldtraveller #traveltips #beautifulplaces #exotic

At first glance this work of art located at the children's hospital of San Antonio looks like a large and beautifully painted mural. Upon closer inspection you realize that it is a massive tile mosaic masterpiece! The "Spirit of Healing" mosaic is the work of renowned San Antonian artist Jesse Trevino and consists of over 2000 pieces of German tile, known for its hardness and resistance to fading. The monumental mosaic is over 90 feet tall and 43 wide and faces Milam park in downtown San Antonio. It is the largest tile mosaic of its kind in the United States. Oh, and Trevino also created this mural one handed, having lost his right hand in Vietnam. #Adventure #adventuretravel #adventuretime #adventurer #travelling #traveling #travellife #travelislife #traveltheworld #travelgram #texas #travelabroad #travelmore #solotravel #travel #collegetravel #luxurytravel #satx #sanantonio #worldtraveler #worldtravel #worldtraveller #traveltips #beautifulplaces #exotic

As a kid one of my first memories of San Antonio was taking a tour of the Riverwalk on one of the boat tours. Today, it is still one of my favorite ways to explore the Riverwalk. A ride on the San Antonio River introduces you to many points of interest along both the downtown and museum reach during a 35 minute guided tour. A few points of interest include La Villita (San Antonio's first neighborhood), interesting architecture such as the 2D skyscraper, Selena's bridge, and the Old Mill crossing, where Teddy Roosevelt led his rough riders. If you're not in the mood to take the tour, but just want to travel around from place to place, there is a river shuttle that goes through downtown all the way up to The Pearl. Shuttles come by about once an hour. Note: the shuttle may or may not be operating right now during this time of year, but the tour definitely is. #Adventure #adventuretravel #adventuretime #adventurer #travelling #traveling #travellife #travelislife #traveltheworld #travelgram #texas #travelabroad #travelmore #solotravel #travel #collegetravel #luxurytravel #sanantonio #worldtraveler #worldtravel #worldtraveller #traveltips #beautifulplaces #riverwalk

Built in 1931, the Nix professional building is a skyscraper located near the riverwalk in downtown San Antonio. It has piqued the interest of both tourists and San Antonians alike because from certain angles, the building looks 2D. The sharp angles of the building give it the 2D illusion when looking at it from the Riverwalk. The Nix building was originally a hospital and was the only hospital that housed doctor's offices, hospital beds, and a parking garage within the same building. It was also the only hospital located in a skyscraper. #Adventure #adventuretravel #adventuretime #adventurer #travelling #traveling #travellife #travelislife #traveltheworld #travelgram #texas #travelabroad #travelmore #solotravel #travel #collegetravel #luxurytravel #satx #sanantonio #worldtraveler #worldtravel #worldtraveller #traveltips #riverwalk #opticalillusion

If you're a history buff, or just want to feel connected with a unique piece of Texas and San Antonio history take a trip over to Maverick Whiskey near the Alamo. The building is located on the original homestead of the maverick family, and where Maverick Whiskey is located was once a bank. The whiskey is aged in barrels located in the original bank vault imported from NYC (cutting edge security at the time). Samuel Maverick was an important individual in local and Texas government and was a signer of the Texas declaration of independence. at the Alamo just days before they were attacked by Santa Anna's army. A vote was held and Maverick was asked to represent what is now Bexar county in the new government. He was sent to Washington-on-the-Brazos to contact Sam Houston and ask for help. Just days later, the battle of the Alamo was fought, but Sam Maverick went on to fight at the deciding battle of San Jacinto where the battle cry "remember the Alamo" became famous. Perhaps it was Sam who coined the phrase. Sam eventually was elected as mayor of San Antonio. Today his descendants run Maverick Whiskey. It's a great place to go check out. They say the history seeps into the whiskey and effects the taste. Fun fact: The term "maverick" originates from Sam as well! (Ps-I am in now way paid or compensated for this post. I just really found it to be a cool place with lots of great history) #Adventure #adventuretravel #adventuretime #adventurer #travelling #traveling #travellife #travelislife #traveltheworld #travelgram #texas #travelabroad #travelmore #solotravel #travel #collegetravel #luxurytravel #satx #sanantonio #worldtraveler #worldtravel #worldtraveller #traveltips #beautifulplaces #whiskey

Panther Azul is a climbable mosaic sculpture built by San Antonio artist Oscar Alvarado. It is located in Yanaguana Park and tells a creation story of where the Yanaguana came from. The Yanaguana, a Payaya Native American village, lived by the San Antonio River long before there was a San Antonio, or even a Texas. I haven't been able to find the complete story but I'll tell you what I know so far. The story goes that a blue panther lived in a blue hole (San Antonio River headwaters). An ahinga bird would dive into the water for sustenance and the panther would chase it out. When the bird came out of the hole, water droplets would spill off its wings and fall into the land, giving life to the area. I'll try to find more details on that story for the future. The sculpture is made up of 10,500 pounds of concrete and 150 pounds of glass beads! Yanahuana Park, located at Hemisfair, is also one of the top parks in the city for kids and adults alike for play. The park features a sand play area as well as a great splash pad. Much of the playground equipment is adaptive allowing children with wheelchairs to participate in the fun. There is an area with cornhole, fooseball, and ping pong tables with accompanying equipment available. All the playground structures were designed by a cognitive development specialist who studies how children learn to play. Everything was designed to be fun, exciting, and educational. If you get the chance, go check out the park, the PantherAzul, and other art located here are Yanaguana Park. #Adventure #adventuretravel #adventuretime #adventurer #travelling #traveling #travellife #travelislife #traveltheworld #travelgram #texas #travelabroad #travelmore #solotravel #travel #collegetravel #luxurytravel #satx #sanantonio #worldtraveler #worldtravel #worldtraveller #traveltips #beautifulplaces #art

Hi y'all! In honor of the world heritage festival going on in San Antonio this weekend celebrating the missions, I wanted to highlight the only mission I hadn't posted about yet. Mission San Juan came to Texas in 1731 and became important to the early success of the San Antonio area as well as an important hub of the greater region. Native American artisans produced goods suck as iron tools and cloth, while farmers provided food to the missions, local settlements, and garrisons throughout the region. Orchards, gardens, farms, and ranches produced grapes, melons, maize, sweet potatoes, sugar cane, and more. Today you can visit the church and grounds of the mission. There is also a walking trail traversing near the San Antonio River. The San Antonio Missions NHP also runs a farm you can visit with the produce going to the San Antonio food bank. If you'd like to participate in this weekend events for the world heritage festival, check out this link: https://www.worldheritagefestival.org/ #Adventure #adventuretravel #adventuretime #adventurer #travelling #traveling #travellife #travelislife #traveltheworld #travelgram #texas #travelabroad #travelmore #solotravel #travel #collegetravel #luxurytravel #satx #sanantonio #worldtraveler #worldtravel #worldtraveller #traveltips #beautifulplaces #unesco
