‘How did you get into this?’ Is a question I get asked a lot. And I guess I can’t be honest with my answer without acknowledging a few things first. The first year of my mothering journey was hard. Throw in the pandemic, and some health concerns post baby, and you’ve got a real 💩 storm of post-partum. I was diagnosed with PTSD and PND shortly after my son turned 1. One of my triggers with PTSD was loud noises. Mentally, I’d behave like an explosion had happened when, in reality, someone had just placed a cup a bit too heavily on a table. I couldn’t socialise without having panic attacks (I genuinely thought panic attacks were BS and heavily romanticised before my own). As a teacher, working in schools, where noise was just part of the job, meant my professional integrity was compromised. Shortly after my son’s first year I left my teaching career with no explanation and no questions asked. My friends stopped asking how I was and I questioned anyone who tried to offer me help as I never believed it was heartfelt. My medical team at the time said I should get back into small things I enjoyed. I loved skincare and beauty and all things tanning, I just no longer believed I had time for it. I especially didn’t think anyone would want to see it?? I like the idea of contributing to a platform that’s kind and positive and real and sometimes just takes the edge off the day, without being in your face about it. This way I also get the time back that I feel I lost during my first year with my son. So I guess I can’t say I’m a wealth of experience. But I do love teaching and if I can combine that with interests I genuinely love too, happy days. I don’t know anyone with PTSD or with similar symptoms, but I’d love to connect more with people and find strategies which work best. And if you’re reading this and feel you know of someone with PND, just be kind and patient. They don’t recognise themselves just as much as you probably don’t recognise them. Winter weather can play havoc on our skin, so here are a few simple steps you can take without having to break the bank: ✨ LAYERING: You need a skincare ‘wardrobe’ at this time of year, more than any other. Follow a regimented cleanse, tone, mist, serum, cream, oil and/or balm routine and your skin is going to thank you for it. ✨IF skin is still feeling dry after incorporating a thicker moisturiser (the @beautypie japanfusion Elixir is next level), mix 1-2 drops of facial oil in with your daily moisturiser. I love the @byoma Hydrating recovery oil which, for the price, is a fab winter investment. ✨ The skin’s barrier can be particularly compromised this time of year, and the @officialreome Active recovery broth, albeit expensive, is literally like a Kombucha to the face.
