Fun day shopping and wandering around Heraklion, the capital of Crete. Lots of the city centre is now pedestrianised so it's easy to meander along. The city is in two parts, the old town which was established in mediaeval times and then the modern bustling city and port. It's a good idea to being exploring at the fishing harbour where the imposing Venetian fortress "Rocca al Mare" or "Koules" guards the entrance. Just behind are the stone archways which were used for storing the guns and gun powder. Knossos was the centre of Minoan civilisation. The "palace" was actually an important city in antiquity which was inhabited continuously from the Neolithic period until the 5th c. AD. According to Greek Mythology, it was the seat of the wise king Minos (actually a high priestess) and is famous for the legends of the Labyrinth and the Minotaur, and the story of Daidalos and Ikaros. The 5 level city flourished as a trading centre for over 2,000 years and covered over 20,000 square metres. Advanced for its time it featured frescos, a complex drainage and water supply system, light wells and the use of wooden beams to reinforce the masonry. Spinalonga also known as the "island of the living dead" or "leper island". A short 25 minute boat ride from Elounda, the island is the most popular archaeological site in Crete after Knossos. Only 85 acres in size, the island has had a fascinating past remaining under Venetian rule until the Ottoman's took over in 1715 and stayed until 1903. From 1903 to 1957 the island become a leper colony reaching up to 400 inhabitants at its peak.
