The African Jacana - these unusual wading birds are identified by their long legs and extremely long slim toes and claws which enable them to distribute their weight evenly, thereby allowing them to walk across water on thin and flimsy floating vegetation. πͺΆ Photo credit: @kellylandrey β’ β’ β’ β’ #RhinoSafariCamp #AfricaParks #Matusadona #WildZambezi #matusadonaconservationtrust #TravelZim #AfricanParksNetwork #LakeKariba #MatusadonaNationalPark #safari #africaseden #WhenInZim #wildzambezi #explorezimbabwe #wheresafaricomestoyou #closertonature #birds #africanjacana #jacanafeet #birdsfeet #birdsofafrica

In 1987 Zimbabwe had the largest population of black rhinoceros in Africa. Over the next five years it lost over 80% of its population as a result of poaching activities. In 1992 the government of Zimbabwe, through the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Management, established intensive protection zones (IPZs) as part of a comprehensive strategy to save the rhino. Matusadona National Park was one of four IPZs that were formed in 1993 to conserve rhinos. Sadly, this did not save the Matusadona rhinos and this skull is from one of the very last ones to be poached in the area. However, today we are celebrating some incredibly good newsβ¦ Thanks to the @AfricanParksNetwork, through effective management, infrastructure, engagement with local communities, rigorous protection, and well-managed tourism, they are aiming to restore Matusadona as Zimbabweβs premier Rhino Sanctuary with the re-introduction of Black Rhino.
