Recent news confirmed that more than 90% of the gorillas at Atlanta’s Zoo have been tested positive for COVID-19, they have been tested after showing typical symptoms. The Zoo officials mentioned that they believe that the apes have been infected by an asymptomatic employee and some of the gorillas are even infected with the delta variant. PCR testing of gorillas in Zoos is a more common practice than we think. What do you think about this? What do you think about Reverse Zoos? In a wildlife sanctuary in South Africa, a non-profit implemented cages, where instead of having animals inside, visitors enter the enclosures to be able to observe the animals in a more appropriate habitat. We believe this is a step forward to solve the problem of traditional zoos, where they keep animals locked up, suffering, so that humans can observe them. Although these cages are not necessary to observe gorillas in the wild, since they do not present a threat to humans, we must encourage these initiatives so that once and for all there are no more wild animals in zoos. 🦍💚🙏🌱 ------------------------------------ Que piensas sobre los Zoos Inversos? Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda is planning to acquire 40 square miles to extend the gorillas' habitat. Figured from the Rwandan Development Board show that mountain gorillas population grew 58% between 2003-2016, which was the last population census. This might be explained by the expansion of the park, which contributes to the migration of gorillas during hot and cold seasons. The Franklin Park Zoo in Boston invested USD 8.1m in a new, larger cage for their Gorillas. The investment has been made for a “more memorable experience” when visiting the zoo, meaning that the people can watch the gorillas more closely. All four Gorilla sub-species are officially (critically) endangered – this means that there are only a few gorillas left. It is estimated that around 1,000 mountain gorillas, 100k western lowland gorillas, around 4,000 eastern lowland gorillas, and around 200 cross river gorillas are left. As you guys can note there are very few gorillas left, we don’t know the exact numbers – but we know that the number of gorillas is sharply declining every year. For a long time, gorillas have been exposed to different kind of extinction causes – as poaching for bush meat, illegal mining operations and the destruction of their natural habitat for palm oil plantations and housing. We also should not forget the gorillas who are encaged in zoos and spend their lives miles away from their natural habitat in small cages without being able to move freely. 2 days ago was the fifth anniversary of Harambe’s death. For the ones who don’t know the sad story of Harambe, he was a western lowland gorilla, captive in Cincinnati Zoo in Ohio. The Gorilla was murdered by the zoo staff because a child fell into his cage. Harambe did not hurt the child - although they decided to kill him. What are your thoughts? We think that Harambe should never have been in that situation - locked into a cage, away from his habitat and then as a result being murdered.
