A few years ago we were lucky enough to have the brilliant @amena_music model for us. . Since that day she has been an advocate and supporter of Origin and we have been able to follow her journey too. Her incredible talent is plain for all to see, and last week she announced she will be stepping into the iconic role of Eponine in Les Misérable at The Sondheim Theatre. . We couldn’t imagine anyone more perfect for the role. Best of luck Amena, we can’t wait to come and see you in action! ❤️ . 🙌

This represents Origin’s meaning and path, made while designing the most responsible clothing brand we were capable of. It’s a learning process we are committed to at Origin ❤️ . Here are some questions that may have crossed your mind about our Made in Kenya products and the supply chain behind it all. . Why use cotton? Doesn’t it take loads of water to make cotton? That doesn’t sound very eco friendly! . Interestingly, the recent 2021 Transformers Foundation Report (Cotton: A Case Study in Misinformation) actually de-bunks the myth that cotton is a water thirsty crop and instead informs us of the relevant truth with necessary detail to make informed decisions. The reality is, of course, that all crop production requires some consumption but there are ways to minimise the negative impact on the environment. For this shirt we have chosen to use rain-fed African cotton. While it has some complexities, particularly with the long growing process, using rain-fed cotton promotes significantly less water consumption, safer working environments without the use of harmful pesticides, impacts a healthy food system and promotes soil health and fair pricing. This Fashion Revolution Kenya report concludes that using organic, rain-fed cotton in Kenya promotes the use of sustainable resources and is better for the environment. And it’s something we strongly want to support in Origin's work. . Why don’t you use more recycled materials? . All production requires consumption which includes recycled materials. Then you need to consider the impact of the life-cycle of the recycled material - for example recycled polyester will shed micro-fibres each and every time it is washed. Finally, at the end of life for the recycled garment the challenges still remain of how to safely dispose of the fabric itself without sending it to landfill. All things considered, we decided to choose a natural material which has been grown in Africa for centuries. . More on our blog: https://www.originafrica.co.uk/blogs/news/frankly-answered-questions

Hi! 👋 We are Alice and Tom, founders of Origin. You won’t find us doing this often but in the interests of clarifying everything there is to know about Origin and sharing a bit more, we thought it relevant to introduce ourselves here. . Alice is the engine behind Origin, the creative leader and vision provider. Her other interests are nutrition and preparing fresh food, women’s rights across cultures and of course their little girl, Mali. . Tom is the academic mind responsible for keeping Origin on track. His passions lie in health in Africa, connection with African communities and, of course, chasing around after Mali too. . Origin received a range of feedback at the start from unbridled support and love to a range of naysayer techniques. However, here we are 5 years later having supported 8 entrepreneurs create over 60 sustained good jobs, 4 organisations campaign for #stopwastecolonialism #humanrightsinghana #reforestthefuture in The Gambia and #healthforall for individuals living with HIV in The Gambia and crucially moving Origin towards the most ethical supply chain it can be, for both the planet and for the individuals and communities behind the clothing’s creation. . Skipping past awards and superficial qualifications, without doubt the most meaningful part to us is the friends and deep connections we have made along the way, lifelong and irreplaceable parts of our lives. . It has been a steep learning curve and a bumpy ride at times but, we think, worth it ❤️ . #wearitlikeitmatters
