Global warming and the boom + bust economy driven by a reliance on natural resource extraction are prominent tropes. Desert Memory 2 features a night scene of a mountainous landscape. A distant train, its yellow rail cars brimming with what may be coal runs the length of the painting. In ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—•๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ต๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ another train, the cars stacked high with the ubiquitous shipping crates speeds through a scene surrounded by smouldering forest fires on all sides, the thick black smoke pouring into the atmosphere in menacing columns. Undergrowth considers a number of societal issues including resource extraction, climate change + the deindustrialization of the midwest. With pandemic travel restrictions in place Dunford began to take full-time care of his young son. On their daily walks they visited landscapes both natural + manmade mainly in Falcon Lake, MB + Indianapolis, IN. A new aspect of the artistโ€™s practice was born through the ritual of walking + drawing the places they visited.โฃ โฃ The meditative quality present in the exhibition is accomplished through the time the artist takes creating a new work, moving slowly through the composition, translating his consistent walking practice into the work. He methodically plays with the texture, layers + thickness of his paints, contemplating how these measures translate the reverence he holds for the outdoors. Rather than categorize his paintings as landscapes in the sense of the traditional historic genre instead Dunfordโ€™s works are about the places. The eponymous painting Undergrowth presents a scene in which nature has regained dominion, revealed in the portrayal of wild + free growing trees and brush + a barely visible figure, their blue tent partially obscured within the brush. Most recently Dicey was given blueprints from the 30โ€™s that were inserts from Popular Mechanics Magazine. Dicey took to these fold-outs without colour, but focused on shape, line and the structural relationships therein. Diceyโ€™s spontaneous technique and process contradicts the precise drawings of the substrate. โฃ๐—™๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜† Saturday, Aug 28th. โฃ @mullockgo โฃ โฃ ๐—จ๐—ป๐—ธ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜„๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด, a series of monoprints feature the artistโ€™s ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ป ๐—ฐ๐—น๐—ผ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐˜€: torn golden-brown pants, frayed and worn panties, a trusty maroon bra and stretched knee socks among others. Print studios like galleries have been closed during the pandemic and as such the artist used her ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ ๐—ฎ๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ-๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ฐ ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€, ๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฐ๐—น๐—ผ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐˜€ in order to create a mono print while destroying the clothing items in the process. Somewhat akin to the artists earlier work Dark Horse which utilized the weight of a horse to create prints. These prints are simple and minimalist using black ink alone. They are composed in such a way that allow for multiple readings; panties look like masks used to rob banks, socks are configured to resemble cross bones and pantyhose are reminiscent of bunny ears. Each work is framed in a palette of collective bold colours that represents the former hues of the featured garment. The trace each piece of clothing has left as its imprint opens the viewer to a new perspective; ethereal and mysterious, pants, bras, panties and knee socks all take on a transparency similar to an x-ray revealing the inside and outside of their past lives.
