A new pattern hack for one of our older patterns, the Foreman jacket! The Foreman is a mans pattern but we’ve often been asked how it can be adapted for a woman’s shape. Follow the link in the profile for the free downloadable pattern hack. Note you will need the Foreman pattern in order to make this hack. Judy is a size 10 and is wearing the size 38. This cloth is a new cloth that is arriving soon, it’s a soft cotton canvas. This jacket is great in denim, corduroy, cotton canvas and twill, and mid weight wools. Judy is wearing a @franclicraftwear Ramblers Pocket over her jacket. #merchantandmills #freepatternhack #chorejacket #workwear #mmforeman
The Sanda in 12oz Organic Sanded Twill. Our popular 12oz twill is an ideal choice if you want a winter weight coat, but don’t want to use wool. It has lots of structure and body so holds the shape of Sanda well. This shade is Painter’s Navy, but we also have other shades - linked in profile. We do sometimes make samples in colours other than navy, but it doesn’t happen often! #mmsanda #merchantandmills #coatmaking #organiccotton
Chunky corduroy and knitwear is there anything cosier? Judy is wearing the Margo in our Brown 8 Wale Corduroy, we sized up one size to give some wiggle room for a knitted jumper. Margo is a PDF pattern in sizes UK 6-28 (paper to follow on shortly). #mmmargo #merchantandmills #merchantandmillspattern #autumnsewing
Margo is a hard working pinafore dress, featuring classic detailing and top stitching. Make it with dungaree clips or sewn in straps. Designed to be worn just above the ankle Margo is perfect with tights and brogues, or socks and boots. Judy is wearing hers oversized to make room for a chunky jumper underneath, Tash is wearing a vintage shirt from @sunless_antiques. Margo comes in sizes UK 6 - 28, and is PDF only. It will be coming in print within the next month (along with Sanda). Judy bringing the drama in our Sanda photoshoot. Who’s cut it out yet? #mmsanda
Two simple ginghams from our new collection Harvest Haze. Felicity Pink is a plaster pink and navy mix, with a scale of 8cm. This is such a perfect pink, an autumnal pink for sure. Elba Gingham is a grassy emerald green and navy, again 8cm. Because these checks are so large we recommend choosing a pattern that doesn’t have too many details and pieces, breaking up the pattern. Something like the Clover, Trapeze, Florence or Camber. Both linked in profile. #merchantandmills #merchantandmillsfabric #mmclover #mmtrapeze #mmflorence #mmcamber #linenlove #memadewardrobe #handmadewardrobe
Remnants went up Monday instead of Friday this week… lots of jacquard this time! Link in profile… #merchantandmills #merchantandmillsfabric
The Sanda is an oversized coat or jacket with a rolled collar and turn back cuffs. This jacket was initially designed with our cotton jacquard in mind (see Sasha in the third picture) but when we extended the length it suddenly became the perfect winter coat. The first sample was made in a heavy boucle wool (dead stock so now gone) and we’ve also used corduroy, jacquard and our 12oz cotton twill. The thicker the fabric the more structured silhouette you will get. The Sanda is PDF atm, but paper will follow in about a month. Sanda is linked in profile. #mmsanda #coatmaking #merchantandmillspattern #merchantandmills #dressmaking
Painterly Rouge, a favourite from the Harvest Haze collection. Tash is wearing a sleeveless Trapeze. Painterly Rouge is linked in profile. #merchantandmills #mmtrapeze #merchantandmillsfabric #linenlove #dressmaking
Tash is wearing the Florence top made in Traveller linen from our new collection Harvest Haze. The rusty orange is the most perfect shade, and I love that the aubergine adds a subtle contrast. The beauty of yarn dyed linen is you get a slight undulation of colour, so not completely flat like a cloth that has been dyed after being woven. It’s always interesting to see which is the favourite from a new collection, this one was very popular with shops who buy our linen! #mmflorence #merchantandmills #merchantandmillspattern #yarndyedlinen #dressmaking #imakemyownclothes
Join us for our first event at the Merchant & Mills house on the 19th October with @thecharlieporter. We will be chatting to Charlie about his new book ‘Bring no Clothes: Bloomsbury and the Philosophy of Fashion.’ In this conversation we hope to discuss not just Charlie’s book but also our personal relationship with making when dealing with difficult feelings like grief and loss and also the empowerment we can experience by taking fashion into our own hands. This is a free event but you do need to book a spot to attend as space is limited. (Link to book in profile). Location - 4, The Grove, Rye, TN31 7ND Date & Time - 19th Oct, 6-7.30pm (finish time is an estimate) Specially signed copies of the book will be available to buy in the night from @sailorsofrye. ‘Bring no Clothes: Bloomsbury and the Philosophy of Fashion’ is published by Particular Books, an imprint of Penguin. This event is in collaboration with @sailorsofrye.
Harvest Haze, a mix of vibrant hues and subdued tones, a slow nod to the cooler months ahead. We are so pleased with how this collection turned out, it’s a real celebration of colour combinations. As always our linens are made in Europe and designed by us. The linens are 5oz/170gsm, an ideal dressmaking weight. If you look at the product pages you can see a Florence, Trapeze and some 101’s we have made with this collection. Head to the site to see each fabric, linked in profile under ‘new’. Available for Trade, see ‘new’ on wholesale site. #merchantandmills #merchantandmillsfabric #linen #gingham #dressmaking #imakemyownclothes
