They had both imagined a life with a husband and kids and had never been in love with women before they met each other. But fait wanted it otherwise. Today the two women are married with a daughter and expecting a new little one soon. A little throwback to some of my earlier work. When I was just graduating school I spend two years on and off photographing Bonnie, a 37-year old mother of three, working as a sex worker. Sex work is legal to both buy and sell in Denmark, and I wanted to try and documenting the woman behind the profession. This Monday I had such an uplifting experience, that I wanted to share with you all. I was hired to do a talk at @grundtvigshojskole where I presented my work about #fatactivism for the students and other guests. After the talk a woman from the audience came up to me. I could see she was moved and she told me that my worked had really touched her - and that she really loved my storytelling. This always makes me happy to hear of course. But suddenly she started to cry as she shared me some of her thoughts with me: While watching my show she had been faced with her own prejudice towards fat people. She felt so ashamed and also happy to open her mind about the systems of oppressions we as a society have against fat and fat people. We gave each other a vaccinated hug and I drove home really feeling like this work I am doing just might matter. And just might move more people’s oppinions around the world! Just a little food for thought here from the sunny Copenhagen. Pauline: “I’m fighting for children to never be called ‘fat’ as a curse word. Fat is nothing but a descriptive word for a body type. And I’m fighting for schools to get better at stopping bullying. But parents also have a huge responsibility. Parents should not walk around in front of their children and say ‘I feel fat’ or speak negatively about people’s fat bodies in front of their children, because then they will learn that ‘fat’ is a negative word. Other than that, I’m very passionate about democratic fashion. Fashion should be for everyone. Skinny people need to understand how difficult it is for fat people to live in a fat-shaming society. There is a lot of talk about confidence and self-love. For skinny people, it’s all about working with oneself. Matilda: “Three years ago, I had never seen a fat body on social media. I only knew my own body, and I was deeply ashamed of it. Didn’t even look at it in the mirror. With Instagram, I was introduced to a whole new world. When you see people who look like yourself represented in the media, you suddenly feel less wrong and strange. Someone looks like you. I dated when I was younger, and I couldn’t figure out which photos to show on my dating profile: Should I show my entire body? And should I tell that I’m fat? I wrote with some super cute guys. There was chemistry. But as soon as they asked me if we should meet up, I shut down completely. Deleted the match. I was terrified that men would reject me because of my body. I once had a friend who met a guy. They had sex and right after he got home, she got a text that said: ‘I don’t like fat girls and you didn’t look so fat in your picture.’ I met my boyfriend, Emil, at a party. We talked all evening — it was magical. He had to leave the party because he had to get up early the next morning. I decided to send him a message on Facebook. I wrote something about him being cute and how nice the evening was. And at that very moment I pressed ‘send’, a long message popped up on my screen — from him. And he had felt the same way. He ended up coming back to the party to pick me up and then we went to his place. We’ve been together ever since.
