The Darvaza gas crater in Turkmenistan is known locally as the "Door to Hell" or ''Gates of Hell", it is located in a natural gas field. In 1971 a Russian research team were searching for oil when the drilling rig collapsed into an underground cavern. It was set alight in the belief that the gas would be rendered harmless and would burn itself out after a few weeks.
