Honored and thrilled to continue to work with the @theslowfactory team through the Fall semester of Open EDU and beyond. I’m so thankful for the friendships, connections and constant learning with this team. I’m truly grateful to be apart of this community. ʔəsk'ʷədiitubułəd čəd. Swipe for tomorrow’s class! 👉🏽 ‘Tomorrow is another transformative Open Edu experience! This week, Teju Adisa-Farrar @misstej , poet, geographer, and advocate, brings us her class, “Regenerative Design.” Teju will take us on a journey through textile systems, providing space to reimagine a textile system that functions cradle-to-cradle, rather than cradle-to-grave. By taking the time to honor the centuries old practice of regenerative fiber and textile arts, regenerative design considers the importance of the end of life of a textile during the creation process, allowing for more sustainable practices in the future. 📌Join us this Friday, October 8, 2021 at 12PM EDT. 😓 Still need to register? ʔəsq́ič tiiɫ bəḱʷ wiẃsu Every child Matters Today I want to honor my great grandmother Rose Juanita McLeod, who was a survivor of the Cushman (Puyallup) Indian Boarding School. I have been blessed to be able to spend the last 3 full days with my tribe and @niwrc and listen to stories and learn and laugh and cry together. The following slides are from @illuminative , please take the time to learn about these assimilation schools. We will continue to unearth our stolen children, in mourning. I would not be who I am today with out the strength of my great grandmother Rose, my grandmother Winnie and my entire family. 🧡 Via @illuminative ・・・ What is #OrangeShirtDay? Why the color orange? 🧡 Why September 30th? On September 30, we observe National Day of Remembrance for the U.S. Indian Boarding Schools. This aligns with the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation that is honored in Canada for residential school survivors. It is also called Orange Shirt Day to honor the story of one girl whose treasured orange shirt given to her by her grandmother was taken away from her at residential school. The orange shirt has now come to symbolize awareness for the children who died or went missing at these institutions. We encourage everyone to wear orange shirts, raise awareness on that day to educate others, and attend or host community healing events. For more information on healing-informed events to honor boarding school survivors, please visit the link in our bio with resources from @nabshc. #everychildmatters

My long awaited honest and true thoughts about my inclusion in the Met exhibition are now in print @thecut @nymag . Thank you @sangeetaskurtz for sitting with me to discuss this, my family history and more. My 4x great grandfather, who was Cree, worked for the Hudson’s Bay company from 1826-1842 until his retirement to Cowlitz and Nisqually where their children were raised. My family has resided in this same area since then, my great grandmother Rose attended and survived Cushman residential school (aka Puyallup Indian School) until her 8th grade year. This was always my story to tell. And the conversation about the colonial violence perpetuated by the HBC needs to be at the forefront of that conversation. Whether or not I “deserve” this inclusion may be up for debate- but I will always share my true voice and hold people accountable. We have part 2 coming in May. We WILL be represented properly.
