Thank you @fungbro @andrewjfung in coming to our Lao and Cambodian community defense. Always appreciate you guys 🙏🏼. We’ve received a lot of DMs, tags, and messages about the recent talk regarding Lao food being seen as an inferior version of Thai food or shit food, as Uncle Roger @mrnigelng claimed. Instead of responding immediately, we decided to let the steak rest before replying, as we’ve learned not to answer out of anger. We’re not here to educate anyone about Lao food, or the origins of certain Thai/Isaan dishes made by Lao immigrants who fled Laos. Instead, we want to express our gratitude for this Uncle Roger outbreak. It’s the same feel we got when our own people criticize our food, giving us a 1-star review. We, as a community, often judge and critique each other’s cooking relentlessly. However, cooking is vital to our survival, a way to feed our families and share our culture’s voice. Amidst the shit talking, we can use this moment to fuel positivity. Let’s invite Uncle Roger to join us for a family meal, where we can share our stories, educate him about our cuisine, our struggles, all while talking shit, over food, beers, and shots. It’s what we do as a community – talk smack, eat, drink, and eventually hug it out when we’re too drunk to fight😂. Of course, not everyone behaves this way, but it’s part of our fighting spirit. We’re proud of all the Lao sisters and brothers coming together to defend our food. This was a necessary event to stand up for ourselves, to be proud and uplift our culture. While we all aspire to be leaders in our community, let’s not compete to outdo one another. Instead, let’s unite and support each other. We’ve all faced struggles, and some of us hid our identities to fit in. It’s time to stop concealing our culture and appreciate the heritage we were born into.
