Detail of a group of female mourners from the Book of the Dead of Ani. Ani’s Book of the Dead dates to the 19th dynasty and was found in his tomb in Thebes (Luxor). Professional mourners like these women were an essential component of the funeral procession. They would cry, wail, and tear at their hair and clothes. #egyptology #archaeology #ancientegypt #hieroglyphs #hieroglyphics #bookofthedead #funeral #mourners #thebes #papyrus

Detail of a gilded cartonnage mummy mask depicting a woman wearing a winged headdress. The name of this woman is not recorded on the mask, but an inscription on a piece of linen found in association with this mask indicates that she was called Satdjehuty. The mask dates to the early 18th dynasty and originated from Thebes. #egyptology #archaeology #ancientegypt #hieroglyphs #hieroglyphics #mummy #egyptianmummy #museum #funeraryart #satdjehuty

This red granite statue was found at Karnak and depicts Tuthmosis III wearing the white ‘hedjet’ crown. The cartouches of Ramesses II have been inscribed on the shoulders of the statue, and his son and successor Merneptah has added his cartouches to the statue’s chest. #egyptology #ancientegypt #archaeology #hieroglyphs #hieroglyphics #statue #britishmuseum #tuthmosisiii #arthistory #ramessesii

This wooden model of a cattle count was discovered in the tomb of Meketre (TT 280) and dates to the 11th dynasty. The tomb owner himself can be seen sitting on a chair beneath a pavilion flanked by scribes and his eldest son. Farm workers can be seen driving the cattle past Meketre so he can inspect and count them. #egyptology #archaeology #ancientegypt #hieroglyphs #hieroglyphics #tomb #woodenmodel #cattle #farm #egyptianart

The tombs of the North Asasif lie just south of the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari. Although used as a cemetery from the 18th dynasty onwards, the North Asasif experienced a renaissance during the 25th and 26th dynasties where monumental tombs surmounted by mud-brick arches were constructed. One such tomb is that of Montuemhat (TT 34) whose mud brick superstructure can be seen in this photo. #egyptology #archaeology #ancientegypt #egypt #luxor #tomb #deirelbahari #mudbrick #architecture #ancienthistory

A couple of years ago I spent a wonderful afternoon at the Ramesseum, the Mortuary Temple of Ramesses II. This photograph is of the Hypostyle Hall where traces of the original paint still adhere to the column capitals. #egyptology #archaeology #ancientegypt #hieroglyphs #hieroglyphics #ramesseum #temple #luxor #architecture #egypt

Detail from the lunate of a stela depicting Tuthmosis III offering to Ptah. The female figure behind Tuthmosis III is identified in the cartouche as Satiah, who was one of his wives. However, when the cartouche is examined, it is clear that the hieroglyphs within it have been altered. This has led to speculation that this female figure is actually a representation of Neferure, the daughter of Tuthmosis III's coregent Hatshepsut. #egyptology #archaeology #ancientegypt #hieroglyphs #hieroglyphics #egyptianmuseum #ptah #stela #pharaoh #religion

The houses in this photograph are what remains of a village that was built over New Kingdom tombs in the Qurnet Murai section of the Theban Necropolis. The openings you can see to the centre-right of the photo are the entrances to tombs. Who knows how many more may lie under the foundations of these houses? #egyptology #archaeology #ancientegypt #hieroglyphs #hieroglyphics #tomb #cemetery #necropolis #luxor #thebes

This statue depicts Amenhotep son of Hapu as a seated scribe. Amenhotep son of Hapu was a very high ranking official during the reign of Amenhotep III and worked as a priest, a scribe and an architect. After his death, Amenhotep son of Hapu became deified and was worshipped as a god of healing, especially in the Theban region. This statue bears some marks of this devotion as the inscription on the papyrus roll across his lap has been worn away, polished by the touch of thousands of worshippers. #egyptology #archaeology #ancientegypt #hieroglyphs #hieroglyphics #statue #scribe #amenhotep #egypt #egyptianmuseum
