Kaarakin had a great weekend releasing TWENTY Endangered Carnaby’s back out into the wild for their second shot at freedom. They were successfully released into a large roosting site in the Perth Hills after finishing their rehabilitation with us!! Most came in as a result of collisions with motor vehicles or as a result of Cockatoo Hindlimb Paralysis Syndrome (CHiPS). This disease is still not fully understood, but makes up about 25% of our Carnaby’s rescues and is not seen in the other species of black cockatoos. It is sadly thought to be linked to the spraying of organophosphates. This was a very special flock as it contained 6 cockatoos that came in as juveniles and required careful hand-rearing. After having over a year with us, learning to socialise, how to eat native foods and bonding with a flock, they have finally ventured back out into the wild! With Carnaby breeding season about to start we have high hopes at least some of these birds will be able to find a suitable hollow and successfully raise a chick, further helping in the fight to save their species and increase their population! As a not-for-profit this vital work cannot be achieved without the tireless effort and support from our volunteer team, who make this all possible! Crazy for Cockatoos? So are we! In late 2021 we launched our 'Cockatoo Crackle' recycled mat, 10% of the proceeds from which go directly to supporting the Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre. At the time of writing and with your help, we’ve donated more than $15,000 to the centre, funding the rehab and release of over two dozen injured cockatoos. The Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre is the only dedicated black cockatoo sanctuary in the world. The centre not only rescues, rehabilitates and releases injured birds, but it also educates the public through its tours, open days and school visits. CONGRATULATIONS BRADLEY MILLER – FINALIST IN THE RAC VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD! Kaarakin are super proud of Brad who was nominated in the Volunteer of the year awards for 2023 – in the RAC WA Volunteer of the year award category. Brad has been a dedicated volunteer at Kaarakin since 2011 and over the course of 12 years, he has become an integral part of the Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre. Brad's volunteer role is multifaceted as he helps with anything and everything onsite, making his day-to-day activities incredibly diverse. From being Kaarakin's groundskeeper, maintenance man, and plumber to black cockatoo taxi builder, fire mitigation officer, heavy equipment operator, zookeeper, and vet nurse, his contributions are immeasurable. He is instrumental in the rehabilitation of these birds, going above and beyond to rescue black cockatoos in distress, often traveling hundreds of kilometers. Brad's natural leadership qualities, coupled with his kind and empathetic nature, make him highly respected and loved not only by the volunteers and staff that work with him every day but also by everyone he converses with. Brad has been an integral part of Kaarakin's success and the local community for many years. Brad's ability to engage with people and educate them about the endemic species is truly remarkable, making him the perfect person to lead tours, events, and other activities at Kaarakin. Overall, Brad is a truly exceptional volunteer and an inspiration to everyone he works with. His hard work and dedication are both selfless and inspiring, and his contributions to Kaarakin and the community are immeasurable.
