In doing therapy, especially with young people, I’ve found that people’s unhappiness often reflects their failure to behave according to their own standards—in relation to school or work or their ethics. Young people often externalize the problem, believing they’re unhappy because others (e.g., parents, teachers) are unhappy with them, as opposed to recognizing that they’re unhappy with themselves.
