A technical fault left Tower Bridge stuck open on Monday afternoon with cars and pedestrians left either side of the famous London landmark. Pictures posed on social media showed the bascules jammed upright after being opened to allow a Jubilee Trust Tall Ship to pass through. On average, Tower Bridge opens its bascules around 800 times a year, that's around twice a day. The fault brought traffic in part of central London grinding to a halt with people wanting to cross having to turn back or wait. A nurse on her way to work tweeted: "Tower Bridge is currently experiencing a technical fault and the bridge is stuck open. Slight pause to my walk #NursesActive but it was cool to see the bridge open for the first time in my life! [pic: Twitter/LizTunbridge]

A meadow of wildflowers has blossomed at the site of a former Covid-19 mortuary site which was removed a year ago. The temporary mortuary, set up at the height of the pandemic, was erected on the southern end of Epping Forest, which covers parts of London and Essex. A fence was built around the site to allow cornflowers, yellow goat’s beard, German chamomile, cow vetch, meadow pea, corn marigold, common selfheal and oxeye daisies to grow over the last year. The fence has now been taken down and from Thursday visitors can enjoy the flowers. The mortuary at Wanstead Flats opened last April and was one of six temporary sites set up across London to store the bodies of people who died from the virus before their commemoration and burial.

Disappointed visitors to London's newest attraction are being offered refunds after "teething problems" and highly critical reviews of the Marble Arch Mound. Westminster Council admitted parts of the artificial mountain in central London were "not yet ready". The authority said a team has been brought in fix the problems over the next few days. The 25-metre mound was designed to give views of Oxford Street, Hyde Park, Mayfair and Marylebone. It was part of a scheme to increase the number of people visiting the shopping district as lockdown restrictions ease. But there have been some complaints following its opening that work is still ongoing, with some people taking to social media to pan the attraction - including Emma Wright who described it as "the worst thing I've ever done in London".

Ecstatic clubbers returned to the dancefloor for the first time in over a year as nightclub boss Jeremy Joseph warned of more uncertain days ahead. Joseph, who owns G-A-Y and Heaven, celebrated the reopening of his club in central London as almost all coronavirus restrictions in England were eased. He said it meant his business "would probably survive" but packed dancefloors also presented risks. "I do feel like, am I putting people at risk? I don't feel 100% comfortable with this. I don't feel comfortable being in this environment," said Jeremy Joseph. "As soon as everyone started dancing on stage I came off the stage because I didn't want to be around people," he added.

The driver of a stolen car made a dramatic escape from police by driving down a railway track in Hertfordshire. Footage posted on social media showed the black 4x4 driving past the platform at Cheshunt Station before the car was abandoned. Two officers were injured and a number of cars damaged after police attempted to intercept the vehicle. Police are hunting for the driver who managed to flee the scene. A Hertfordshire Police spokeswoman said: “At around 9.30am on Thursday 15 July, our control room was made aware that a stolen vehicle had travelled into Hertfordshire ground, from Essex. “The vehicle was located in Cheshunt and officers from Essex Police attempted to speak to the driver. “The vehicle then made off, injuring two officers and damaging several vehicles in the process. “Officers from Hertfordshire also attended to assist with the search and the vehicle was found abandoned on nearby train tracks, in Windmill Lane. “A search of the area is currently being carried out to locate the driver and officers are working alongside British Transport Police to recover the vehicle. It was not struck by a train at any point. “Anyone who witnessed the incident, or saw the vehicle driving in the area, is asked to contact police on 101.”
