With a new album, @lanellgrant s putting her voice front and center Lanell Grant’s first solo Hip-Hop album, I Ain’t Gone Hold You, is an endeavor that’s been a long time coming. The Houston native and Alief-raised music maker has produced more than 10 albums for other artists in fewer than five years while simultaneously building a family. Her award-winning sound, which often uses her own voice in the background as an instrument, has now taken her to new heights to assemble an album with her voice front and center. Due to record-breaking temperatures that caused trouble in 2022, the festivities are being scaled back this Saturday—but big changes are coming in 2024. Last year’s Houston Pride Parade was a record breaker. After a two-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the parade and accompanying festival welcomed between 700,000 to 800,000 in 2022, a marked increase from the 600,000 who are estimated to have showed up when the event had been held last in 2019. Unfortunately, there was also record-breaking heat. “We had four cooling buses,” says Kendra Walker, president of @pridehoustontx, the organization that puts on the festival and parade. “Those buses were full by 2 p.m. Our headliner didn’t even come on until 4 p.m.” Tap the link in our bio for more. ICYMI: After being closed for more than two years, the building is being renovated with a full kitchen, dine-in theater seating, and new programming. Spike Lee almost premiered his 1986 feature-length debut, She’s Gotta Have It, at the River Oaks Theatre in Houston. “He was going to come to town, and I set up all these press interviews. It was a lot of work because nobody knew who he was,” recounts Maureen McNamara, cofounder and director of Friends of the River Oaks Theatre, and a former manager at the venue’s longtime operator, Landmark Theatres. “I had two days packed chock-a-block with interviews… and he ended up having to cancel at the last minute.” A couple of years later, she teasingly informed him that he needed to sign 50 posters to make it up to her. He did. The River Oaks Theatre has had plenty of brushes with celebrity since then, but the storied building showed what many feared would be its last feature on March 25, 2021, after the theater failed to come to an agreement with its landlord. Property Watch: A Heights bungalow with way more space than meets the eye 👀 From the street, it’s not hard to imagine that this 1925 bungalow looks much the same as when the neighborhood was built out 100 years ago. The front still has many hallmarks of the bungalow construction, like a deep front porch trimmed in three tapering columns, wide front steps, and large double-hung windows. Inside, however, the floor plan tweaks the traditional, with surprise vaulted ceilings in many of the main living spaces and exposed wood beams crisscrossing the expanse to retain the bungalow scale. Coming Home: Paintings by Forrest Bess Forrest Bess was a painter, fisherman, and arguably one of the greatest artists Texas has ever produced. Choosing to live in isolation in a fishing cabin in Chinquapin on the Texas Gulf Coast, he fished and operated a bait camp by day and painted by night. This special exhibition features 8 rare paintings that span Bess' lifetime that have never before been seen including a beautiful pastel painted as a teenager from the Bess family collection. Many of these paintings were given as gifts to fellow neighbors and community members of Bay City, the place he called home. Included in this exhibition is what may be the last painting Bess ever created titled "The End." This is the first exhibition of his work in his home county of Matagorda County since 1977.
