The weather in Hong Kong is nonetheless still pretty toasty and autumnal colours are still hiding. Artist Ju Lian lived in Guangzhou - known as the city of flowers - where it allowed him to observe how flowers bloomed and crumpled in his courtyard and nearby countryside. The Chinese poet Su Shi claimed that Cottonrose Hibiscus is the only beauty of autumn. However, from Ju Lian’s 𝘈 𝘏𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘍𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘴 scroll painting, we can see that Cottonrose Hibiscus is not the only beauty! Other autumn plants, such as Sweet Osmanthus, Garden Nasturtium and Tuberose, are equally adorable. . This entire scroll is done in boneless style with delicate colouring and scrupulous brushwork. How are they connected? . Just as surrealism gained traction in the west, the Guangdong art circle saw the emergence of two major schools, namely, the Lingnan School of Painting and the Chinese Painting Research Society. During the Japanese invasion of China in the 1930s, the Lingnan School of Painting strove to waken national spirit by creating social themed artwork highlighting battle scenes and enemy invasions ; while the Chinese Painting Research Society expressed more introverted thoughts and notions with idioms, epithets, and noble deeds, by conveying ancient hermits leading simple lives and in some cases, eventual martyrdom. . “Art of the South Nanling: A Selection of Guangdong Painting from the Hong Kong Museum of Art” presents how the two schools attained the same goal despite different ideologies ― innovation vs tradition― and eventually sowed the seeds of art in Hong Kong.
