Do you know who this is??? It’s Phyllis O’Donell the first World Surfing Champion in 1964. She paved the way for all of us, in a time when there were real barriers to women surfing. From her Hall of Fame induction in 1996:: Phyllis O’Donell came to surfing relatively late in life as a 23-year-old in 1960. But with natural athleticism and a never diminished enthusiasm, she quickly made up the lost time. In 1964, she became Australia’s first official World Women’s Champion and helped establish a tradition of Australian women’s surfing excellence. For a 10-year period from the early 1960s Phyllis was a dominant force in World, Australian and Queensland women’s surfing. A World Champion, eight times Queensland Champion, and three time Australian Title winner in 1963, 1964 and 1965, Phyllis was rewarded for her talent and dedication. Phyllis O’Donell helped Australian surfing onto the world stage at a time when the sport was dominated by Hawaiians and Californians.

@jocelynneumueller is taking on the world and no one or nothing can stop her. With a similar philosophy to Gayle Main, she’s actively helping inspire and empower people living with disability to be what they can see. This Saturday she and the adaptive surfers of Australia will take centre stage at the Australian Surf Championships for the fourth Para Surf Titles. This year will see one of the strongest draws since its inception in 2016. It’s the first Aussie Surf Titles event for Jocelyn who won the Hawaiian Adaptive Surf Championships earlier this year. She is no stranger to para-sporting excellence - she’s been a Para-Olympian and is a World Champion Para-Canoe athlete. Jocelyn only has function of one limb so she competes in the prone assist division. “I love surfing because the ocean doesn’t discriminate. Once you’re on a wave you have the same capacity to ride the wave as anyone else. Your functionality on land is irrelevant, the water is the most amazing leveller, it brings equality," she said. "Once you’re on a wave, it’s an equal playing field and that’s what makes it so special.” Good luck Jocelyn ⚡️🏆

Today was special. Gayle Main from Victoria is turning 70 in December. She believes that if you can see it you can be it. After watching beautiful 60-70 year old surfers in Noosa a few years back, she was so compelled to start competing again she did. Three years ago @surfingaus introduced the Womens Over 60 division and today Gayle became the Australian Champion in that division. She wants you to know that ANYONE can compete in masters surfing, don’t ever think you can’t. Next year, if you’re 35 years or over, enter in your state titles! It’s not about making the world tour, it’s about community, staying fit and of course trying your very best to win but surrounded by amazing people who have lived a life and share a passion for surfing and the ocean. 🏆 Congratulations Gayle, you brought a smile to our faces today! We're so beyond stoked for @Surfing_NSW Judge @ToryGilkerson to be appointed Longboard World Tour Head Judge by the @wsl this week. Tory has been such an inspiration for many who have started the free online foundation judging course earlier this year. She's an incredible role model in the sport. Not only is she an accomplished athlete, 2016 World Longboard Champion and 2018 ISA Champion, but she's now laying the path for women in judging and surfing operations. Tory is a judge for Surfing NSW, the WSL Qualifying, Challenger and now World Tour series events. In 2021 when surfing debuted at the Tokyo Olympics, Tory was selected to be right there too. "I am excited to bring my experience as a CT-level judge and top-level longboarder to the Head Judge position," Tory said. "My priority in this role is to provide clear and fair judging to the surfers. I plan to make traditional longboarding criteria understandable and more transparent while working with the panel to promote the style of surfing that demonstrates the key elements of the criteria and the overall vision of traditional longboarding. I also hope to create a scale that encourages the surfers to push the level of their surfing and further advance the sport." We're so proud of you Tory!

So epic to see one of our faves @philippa.anderson dominating at the US Open of Surfing this week. Philzy took out WCT surfer and dual US Open winner @courtneyconlogue yesterday! Such an inspiration for our community of women in the water. Philippa’s resilience and strength is incredibly admirable. Keep up with her progress this week via @wsl. ⚡️ @macyjanecallaghan and @picklummolly also through the elimination round.
