It is not only games that are governed by certain rules: photography is also subject to them. 👀 This is particularly evident on Instagram, as illustrated by Emma Agnes Sheffer’s profile @insta_repeat: The more likes, clicks and shares a picture gets, the more influence it has on visual idioms which ends up in unwritten aesthetic rules and a process of standardisation – a phenomena that is explored in our current exhibition How to Win at Photography – Image-Making as Play. 🔥🏕🌲 • On show until October 10! • Pictured: Emma Agnes Sheffer, image collection from Instagram, 2021 © The authors and Insta Repeat • #gamification #instarepeat #fotomuseumwinterthur

In-game photography has become commonplace within video game culture. 🎮📸 Often disregarding the game’s intended goals, photographers and artists choose instead to visually document what they encounter. They deconstruct these spaces and, in some cases, their activity is a form of resistance, a refusal to accept the rules. ❌ Game Travel – Playing Tourist is one of the chapters of our current show How to Win at Photography – Image-Making as Play. • On show until October 10! ✌️ • Photo by @conradinfrei • #ingamephotography #fotomuseumwinterthur

Book launch and artist talk with Pascal Greco! 📖 ⚡️ • During last year’s lockdown, artist Pascal Greco had planned a trip to Iceland to photograph the country. Due to travel restrictions, he was unable to set out on the journey. He discovered the game #deathstranding with its landscapes reminiscent of Iceland and instead started taking pictures in the game. • The project will be published as a book titled Place(s) and will be officially released on October 18. A limited number of copies will be available exclusively at the event at Fotomuseum Winterthur. 📌📌 • During the artist talk, Greco, a self-taught filmmaker, cinematographer and photographer living in Geneva, will present his work and approach in conversation with Marco De Mutiis, curator of the exhibition How to Win at Photography. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience and a book signing. • Saturday, September 11 at 4pm ✌️ • Images: Pascal Greco, from the series Place(s), 2021 © Pascal Greco • #fotomuseumwinterthur #lovewinterthur #ingamephotography

Employing game mechanics the artist Akihiko Taniguchi explores the possibilities of rethinking the act of taking pictures within computer games. 🎮 🎮 🎮 From virtual self(ies) to image search engine filters, from green screens to multiplied screenshots flying through surreal spaces, his work Parallax immerses players within the machinic processes that regulate contemporary image-making – through a game-like interaction, the players experience photographic capture as a form of play. • Part of our current show How to Win at Photography – Image-Making as Play ✌️ • Photo by @conradinfrei
