DanceWest Fest 2023: We are looking back at the artists commissioned to create work for the Established artists platform @lyrichammersmith GERRARD MARTIN Obsidian explored Black masculinity; specifically its beauty, intersectionality and vulnerability - elements often overlooked, dismissed or hidden. Gerrard Martin has danced for Phoenix Dance Company, Tavaziva Dance, Union Dance Company, Ballet Black, The Lion King, Aletta Collins Dance Company, State of Emergency, National Theatre, English National Opera, and the Royal Opera House. He created Gerrard Martin Dance (GMD) in 2011, which produces works of emotive and socially relevant dance-theatre.GMD‘s work has been featured at the Tate Modern, the Place, Curve Theatre, National Portrait Gallery, South Bank, British Museum, National Portrait Gallery and The West Bengal Federation of Dance, India. Gerrard was the movement director on productions such as ‘Black Superhero’, ‘GHB Boy’, ‘BEAM’, & ‘CAKE’. He was assistant choreographer on ENO’s Porgy and Bess, the One Love Musical, and the 40th UAE Royal Anniversary Performance, Abu Dhabi. DanceWest Fest 2023: Established choreographers platform. Each day this week we are looking at a different artist commissioned to make new work for the festival today… JAMAAL BURKMAR Voyager 3: Three dancers imagine a place where a future ship from the Voyager program lands on an alien planet and encounters a civilisation with a special, innate affinity for sound. They explore the documentation and imagery included on the ship sent by us earthlings, including one of my Spotify playlists that made it aboard. Jamaal (he/him) is an internationally recognised award-winning choreographer, and a graduate of the Northern School of Contemporary Dance. His debut work Ocean, was commissioned as a second-year student and later reworked for NSCD's postgraduate company. Jamaal is the winner of the New Adventures Choreographer Award his work challenges Eurocentric ideals to create inclusive contemporary choreography.
