Nona Inescu, born in 1991, divides her time between Berlin and Bucharest. Inescu's art spans photography, installations, sculptures, and videos. It delves into the deep ties between the human body and its environment, especially within a post-human context. She masterfully portrays the body as a mediator for experiencing the world, influenced by emotions, serving as a bridge between self and reality. Inescu’s work explores geological time and humanity's bond with nature, showcasing a harmony of modern and primal aesthetics. It is all the more fortunate that, starting in 2013 and with the generous support of a small group of patrons at the initiative of HRH Duke Franz of Bavaria, it was possible to acquire the extensive suite of test prints for Georg Baselitz's artist's book Malelade from 1990 for the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München. CFA Basel is open to the public now and part of Kunsttage Basel. Come by Totengässlein (!) 5 in Basel to see the new space in a house built in 1345 and to view our solo with Ulrike Ottinger❣️ 1962, just 20 years old, Ottinger packed everything she could fit into her little Isetta and moved from her hometown of Constance to Paris. It can be revealed here that the little car didn’t quite make the trip and the young woman had to continue the journey by hitchhiking. After arriving in the French capital, Ottinger trained in etching techniques in the print workshop of Johnny Friedlaender. Her spiritual home became the antiquarian bookshop Paris Calligrammes, which she memorialized in her 2019 film of the same name, an autobiographical cinematic account of her time in Paris. Run by Fritz Picard, the bookstore was frequented by the leading French and exiled intel- lectuals and artists of the time. Here the young artist was, as she herself says, „provided a stairway to the world.“ She begins to work as a freelance artist – drawing, etching and painting. She also regularly attends the lectures of Claude Lévi-Strauss, Louis Althusser and Pierre Bourdieu at the Collège de France. We are pleased to present rarely shown works from Ottinger’s early years in Paris in our new gal- lery space in Basel. These are not only stunning works of her own pictorial language, they also fore- shadow Ottinger’s later cinematic idiom, which launched her on an impressive worldwide career as a film artist.
