BEACH READING REPORT. I LOVE to see what people are reading no matter where I am, but because beach and summer reading are near and dear to my heart I especially like to snoop what people are reading on vacation! I got back from the beach over a week ago so this report is overdue but it does not disappoint. (Even if I failed to capture a photo of actual people reading on the actual beach in 2023.) What are people reading on the beach in 2023? ACTUAL PAPER BOOKS. So many books! Seriously, it's been a long time since I saw so many physical books on the beach. And not just paperbacks—I saw hardcovers and (gasp!) library books as well! I love it when people read physical books in public because, well, then I can see what they're reading. You know how it is. Last year it seemed like it was all CoHo and Carley Fortune (not good, not bad, just an observation) but this year I was gobsmacked by the diversity of selections (relative to recent years, that is). Colleen Hoover, Emily Henry, Elin Hilderbrand, Taylor Jenkins Reid, of course. But also! Michael Crichton, Tia Williams, David Grann, Michael Connelly (honestly, sooo much Michael Connelly), Jasmine Guillory, Lisa See, Curtis Sittenfeld, Alex Michaelides, Lucy Foley, Patrick Radden Keefe, Elissa Sussman, Brendan Slocumb, it goes on and on. As for what *I* brought to the beach (or bought AT the beach and then read), I share details in Quick Lit on Modern Mrs Darcy, because that's what we do on the 15th of the month. While I was at the beach, did I personally inspire purchases of Gillian McAllister's WRONG PLACE WRONG TIME and Dolen Perkins-Valdez's TAKE MY HAND whilst in the bookstore? Definitely maybe. (Okay, okay: definitely.) If I'm the only one who wants to eavesdrop on other peoples' reading choices, I don't want to know. But if you also like to see what everybody else is reading, tell me in comments. #beachreading #beachreads #readingreport #nerdylikethat #summerreading #mmdsummer reading

On Fridays we wear pink, because as much as I love a certain movie today is all about #curtissittenfeld’s novel ROMANTIC COMEDY! Our #mmdbookclub community manager @gthorton started it when she mentioned earlier this week that she was coordinating her outfit to the book. I followed suit, and when Curtis hopped on to join us for our zoom author chat … she said, why don’t I go grab a pink shirt myself? And since it’s Friday, and that sounded FUN, we said yes! And then we had to take a zoom selfie. We had such a good time discussing her novel and backlist, structure and voice, writers’ rooms, research, favorite SNL sketches, you name it! I’m a nerd at heart and I never tire of hearing straight from the source how the books I love get made. Thank you, Curtis, for sharing your time and insights with us today. It was a joy and an inspiration, and completely life-giving to spend this time with people who love books as much as I do. (Now I’m craving dark chocolate and an hours-long Indigo Girls listen session. #iykyk ) #mmdbookclub #modernmrsdarcy #romanticcomedy #summerreading #summerreadingguide #mmdsummerreading

"What’s your favorite vacation reading experience?" Our community manager posted this today in our @mmdbookclub forums. I struggle with superlatives: "best" and "favorite" are tough questions! But when I read this particular question, a recent favorite reading experience sprang instantly to mind: me, early April, reading David Joy on the front porch of our rented mountain cabin overlooking a roaring creek, realizing the book was set RIGHT THERE in the community where I was reading it. In fact, in the pages two deputies meet for breakfast at a Waynesville spot called The Buttered Biscuit, and at the time I encountered that passage my family was already planning on breakfast there the next day. (We did indeed visit, and eat, and it was fabulous.) I loved this book (out in August). But the location of story + setting took it to the next level. And, let's be honest, any book you read on a mountain porch on a gorgeous spring day with hot coffee and a warm blanket and a rushing creek? SUPERLATIVES. Psst—is this book in our new 2023 Summer Reading Guide? DEFINITELY MAYBE. #vacationreading #mmdsummerreading #summerreading #modernmrsdarcy #summerreadingguide #summerstooshort #whatshouldireadnext

This year’s MMD Summer Reading Guide once again includes a printable “Enthusiasm Meter” that lists all 50 titles and authors, arranged by category. We riffed the rating system in the My Reading Life journal so you can easily mark just how interested you are in each title—and then tuck that list into your journal, purse, or glove compartment so it’s always with you at the bookstore, library, or whenever it’s time to choose your next read. If you like to print things, I HIGHLY recommend printing your enthusiasm meter before you attend our Unboxing party on May 18! We’re hitting “publish” on the guide on Thursday, May 18 at 8:00am EDT. If you’ve not yet preordered or signed up for one of our communities (who receive the guide and Unboxing as an included perk of membership) there’s still time to get yours. It really is the most wonderful, nerdiest time of the year. Here’s to another great summer of reading! #mmdsummerreading #modernmrsdarcy #summerreadingguide #summerreading #whatshouldireadnext #mmdbookclub

This is our twelfth year of creating our Summer Reading Guide. Every year I forget just how much time and effort—and also how much FUN—goes into this big, big project. This year we decided it would be fun to bring you along with us for a peek behind the scenes of how the guide gets from my bookshelf to yours.  Today’s episode features a bunch of voice notes and actual conversations between members of our team that take you into the nitty-gritty of making the Summer Reading Guide. You’ll hear about the basic process I’ve followed for many years now to put it together. I had such a great time looking back at the journey that got us to this year’s guide, dropping May 18. I hope you enjoy hearing all about it and it makes you even more excited to get your copy!
