Instagram Influencer Spotlight On: Sherlyn @instagram.com/wheressherlyn

1) Tell us a little about yourself. What are you doing now and where do you come from?

I am a History and International Relations Professor from Manila, Philippines but I was born and raised in the province of Batangas. I started my Instagram travel blog last 2017 and my mission is to convince people, specifically millennials, that the world is beautiful, they should see more of it, and you don’t need a lot of money to travel. Moreover, since I am a History and International Relations Professor, I love traveling to places with historical significance and share photos some trivia to her followers, and I consider my Instagram account as another lecture hall with my followers as my students. I’m working on to see all provinces in the Philippines and all countries in the world, and so far I’ve been to several Philippine provinces and most Southeast Asian countries. I keep colorful, vibrant, and happy Instagram feed.

2) What are your topics of interest? What do you post on Instagram the most?

Travel and food. I usually post about destinations that are mostly unheard of and provide some trivia about it. I provide historical facts about the places I’ve been to if I can. Also, I recommend Instagram-worthy spots to my followers. Lastly, I always make it a point to try the local delicacies of the places I’m visiting and I post photos of them.

3) How did your Instagram name come about?

Since mine is a travel Instagram account, I want to have the reputation that I’m always out and about. So I always want people to wonder on my whereabouts. That’s where the idea of my username came from: @wheressherlyn. Whenever my friends and colleagues are looking for me, they’re gonna call me with my username. Haha!

4) What are some apps you use to edit your photos? Share with us your photo-editing routine!

I use Snapseed and Lightroom but I am avoiding filters ans presets to make the photo more realistic. I keep the original colors of the photo and just try to make it brighter and more vibrant to suit my Instagram feed theme.

5) Any Instagrammers whom you really like? Which Instagrammer inspires you the most?

I am always inspired with women travelers who have been to so many beautiful destinations. My inspirations are @cherrielynn, @debbieohh, and @i_am_aileen. They are all Filipinas.

6) If there’s one thing your fellow Instagrammers just gotta try now, what’s it gonna be?

If you’re afraid to travel because you don’t want to spend a lot, I’ll encourage you to still try and surprise yourself along the way. You don’t need expensive hotels, fancy restaurants, and shopping sprees. It’s all about the experience. If you’re afraid of spending your money for travel, then where else do you plan to spend them? Material things? Think about it.

7) What’s your favorite part about being an influencer?

My favorite part is being able to know that I’m making an impact and actually inspiring people to explore places, even if it’s just a museum in their hometown or the beach front they’ve been seeing everyday. I also like it when people comment on how happy my Instagram feed looks like because I put a lot of effort in it. Lastly, I am very happy that followers do read my captions, and express their thanks for providing them historical and relevant information about the destinations I’ve been to.

8) What are some of your top tips to brands for running campaigns? How do you maintain authenticity?

I highly recommend that brands would utilize and pay importance to the value that influencers like me can bring to spread information and market their products because we worked hard to build audience which are specific and targeted and create engagement with them. I maintain authenticity by collaborating with brands I truly patronize which are also helpful in maintaining my reputation as a travel blogger.

9) What would your advice be on the importance of quality and original content?

Just be yourself and express your own creativity. You can seek inspiration from others and especially from what do you think people will patronize and support but do not be afraid of exploring not-so-common ideas. After all, who knows, you might be creating your own unique personal brand.

10) What do you like best about partnering with brands?

I like it when brands appreciate your value as an influencer and what you can bring to the table to help them market their products and services. Moreover, I like it when brands give independence to the influencers on expressing themselves in creating ads so that it will still fit in their theme or niche.
