Instagram Influencer Spotlight On: Michelle Phang @pharmichie

1) Tell us a little about yourself. What are you doing now and where do you come from?

My name is Michelle. I am a Pharmacist from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. I’m currently working full time analyzing data in the company I’m working at.

2) What are your topics of interest? What do you post on Instagram the most?

My posts on Instagram mainly revolves around skincare and makeup. My passion for skincare started after I recovered from adult acne. I have since learned that skincare does matter when it comes to keeping a healthy skin. My knowledge as a pharmacist also helped me to understand research studies when looking at ingredients found in skincare products. I do occasional make up contents as well for my followers who prefer lively and colorful contents instead of reading long winded skincare reviews.

3) How did your Instagram name come about?

Pharmacy + Michelle. Mich/Michie is a nickname my uni colleagues call me. So by combining Pharm + Michie = Pharmichie

4) What are some apps you use to edit your photos? Share with us your photo-editing routine!

I use Canva, Meitu and JianYing (the Chinese version of Capcut). I will usually batch create my contents and edit them whenever I have the free time e.g. lunch time at work, at night when all my family members are asleep.

5) Any Instagrammers whom you really like? Which Instagrammer inspires you the most?

I like @hohobeautylog a lot. Her contents are aesthetically pleasing to my taste. Short and sweet but very attractive to watch over and over again.
I also like @joanday as I like her story-telling.

6) What’s your favorite part about being an influencer?

I love meeting and interacting people online rather than in person. I get to know many new brands and try them out before sharing to my friends and family. Some supportive brands are willing to send me products (non-paid as my following is still very small) to try out and give me the freedom of expressing my honest opinion. This greatly helped me financially as I do not need to splurge on the products. The community is super supportive and I feel very nice to have them to talk to whenever I feel burned out. Social media platform is a fairly new place so not many people are able to to understand my struggles. But with the help of the community, I always feel very lifted up.

7) What’s your favorite part about StarNgage? Any exciting campaigns that you have joined through StarNgage before?

StarNgage made me feel welcomed with their brand message and vision. I really hope to join the family. I’ve tried several marketing companies however I always either get ghosted or being told my followers are too small. I hope StarNgage will give me a better experience. So far I haven’t joined any campaigns through StarNgage.

8) What are some of your top tips to brands for running campaigns? How do you maintain authenticity?

I will always post an unboxing post when I received products from brands. I feel that not only this can tell the companies that I’ve received their parcel safely, it also serves as a teaser to my followers on what’s coming up next.
Not only that, I’m able to buy some time to try out the products for at least a week before writing about my opinions.
I like to post pictures or video clips of me using the products and/texture shots to show my followers that I opened and used the products. My followers enjoys texture shots too because texture is one of the factors that makes a person to decide on purchasing a product.

9) What would your advice be on the importance of quality and original content?

Instagram focus a lot on visual contents hence the aesthetic is very important to capture attention.
I always watermark my content to prevent my work from being used without permission.

10) What do you like best about partnering with brands?

Getting to know the brands on a more personal level and trying out new products!
