Instagram Influencer Spotlight On: Jannine @butter_where

1) Tell us a little about yourself. What are you doing now and where do you come from?

I hail from places all over the US, East coast (NY) to West cost (SF, LA) and places between (South Texas), before finally coming back to NYC. I’ve always loved food and taking pictures of the things I eat and make. It was only when my boyfriend started using Instagram to show off his comic collection and follower count that I decided to join Instagram (to beat his measly ass to the ground…j/k! Not really.). Instagram has become way more than just a competition with my boyfriend and being a part of such a warm and welcoming Instagram community of food lovers while I was at a career crossroads meant so much. My food Instagram opened up so many opportunities to meet established influencers and chefs, eat at incredible events, and even landed me a food-centric dream job! I’m floored everyday by the support and positivity I experience from foodstagrammers the world over and I want to keep learning, engaging, and giving back to them as much as I can!

2) What are your topics of interest? What do you post on Instagram the most?

Food. Specifically food I eat when out in NYC from trendy restaurants, my favorite spots, and hidden gems, and meals made with love from home.

3) How did your Instagram name come about?

There was a rumor at my alma mater that its famed ice cream was so high in fat that it was technically considered butter by the FDA. One day, a fellow diner announced, “I’m going to get some ice cream, or BUTTER,” to which I respond, “Butter?? WHERE?!” (I get pretty excited about food.)

4) What are some apps you use to edit your photos? Share with us your photo-editing routine!

I use the native manual settings in Instagram! Sometimes I’ll also use the manual settings in VSCO or autofix a particularly dark photo in Pixlr or Snapseed before manually tweaking things myself in Instagram. I’ve used Photoshop when editing food content at work, but mostly stick with the aforementioned apps for social media.

5) Any Instagrammers whom you really like? Which Instagrammer inspires you the most?

Oh, too many to list!! I have a goal of eating with all the people I follow one day! I’ve done US-AU food exchanges with @mizz_food and she’s thebomb.com and then some! @Jaycegal makes me split my sides every time, she’s hilarious! @please_feed_the_panda, @nomwithmenyc, @foodyensation, @chrissychy, @vivithefoodi, @i.m.tan, @boohsu, and @chelleny make me hungry all the time. @a_strand’s water color art OMG. @foodieeatsthecity, @likingpeople, @nadiafrederika have the most positive and thoughtful comments ever with amazing feeds to boot.

6) If there’s one thing your fellow Instagrammers just gotta try now, what’s it gonna be?

Green tea, black sesame, or Ube ice cream on a King’s Hawaiian roll *drool*

7) What’s your favorite part about being an influencer?

Connecting and meeting others from totally different walks of life that love food and are that person who makes everyone wait to eat to snap a pic! Learning about and supporting these local businesses and the stories behind the dishes these cooks and chefs are making.

8) What are some of your top tips to brands for running campaigns? How do you maintain authenticity?

Never compromise the influencer’s style and the content expectations of their audience! If something’s not consistent with the influencer’s brand, get creative with making a collaboration work. It will be worth it!

9) What would your advice be on the importance of quality and original content?

Have high, reasonable expectations, never compromise them, and be generous with crediting others for inspiring you!

10) What do you like best about partnering with brands?

Learning about how their product came to be (ideas, iterations, failures, launches), its vision, and how it will help others. Meeting the people behind it and making connections that can help others down the road!
