Instagram Influencer Spotlight On: Danny Kern @dbo_photo

1) Tell us a little about yourself. What are you doing now and where do you come from?

I grew up in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains about 2 hours from San Fran and an hour from Truckee. I was always outside being that I was raised on a bit of property. Not too much but just enough to build tree houses, bike jumps and run around with the goats that we had on our property. After high school I went to Australia for four months and then moved to Tahoe to go to school for Digital arts and Journalism in Incline. Now graduated, I am living in Truckee just freelancing as a photographer and film maker around the area. Always looking for work and odd jobs around the random surf, mountain bike and fly fishing trips needed to stay sane. I worked at Mt. Hood all summer after graduating as the marketing photographer for a snowboard camp call High Cascade Snowboard Camp and will continue to travel and shoot snowboarding this winter.

2) What are your topics of interest? What do you post on Instagram the most?

Snowboarding. Mainly, but I’d really like to branch out to surfing, mountain biking, more fishing, more fine art and portraiture. I guess it all just really depends what I am currently doing. It’s hard to keep up on post fresh content on the daily.

3) How did your Instagram name come about?

Well I used to be Dannykernphotography but I always felt that was too generic and basic. All my friends started calling me D bo about a year or so ago so I though dbo photo had a nice ring to it so I went with that.

4) What are some apps you use to edit your photos? Share with us your photo-editing routine!

I don’t really edit photos on my phone I do everything on Adobe Lightroom on my computer and then airdrop photos to my phone. But I’m planning on using the Adobe Lightroom app to edit my photos once I get a new dslr body that can wifi to my phone. Generally I don’t like to edit photos too much so I usually just adjust the exposure and maybe sharpen the image a little in some areas. If the composition is good for a black and white then I will boost the whites and contrast and make it that.

5) Any Instagrammers whom you really like? Which Instagrammer inspires you the most?

Cyrus Sutton is always inspiring. I mainly just follow my friends, snowboarders, and snowboard companies along with some surfing and skating.

6) If there’s one thing your fellow Instagrammers just gotta try now, what’s it gonna be?

Surfing. It’s life changing, and in no way do I mean surfing the web.

7) What’s your favorite part about being an influencer?

I’m not really sure thats something i’ve never even considered or thought about. I guess just knowing that I have the potential to reach out to the number of followers that I have is pretty mind blowing. I have such a small tight nit group of friends that i’m always with so I don’t ever really think about influencing other people. I guess what I would like to do is write more, in hope that people would actually read it. Encourage people to get outside more. WAY more. Ride a bike whenever and where ever you can, and to just be as active as possible for good health.

8) What are some of your top tips to brands for running campaigns? How do you maintain authenticity?

This doesn’t really apply to me but I used to run the @strange_br3w instagram about a year ago for the 3 years before that. I got it from zero to about 6 thousand completely organic followers just by posting my photos.

9) What would your advice be on the importance of quality and original content?

Very!! Quality over quantity almost always and don’t be fake or lie. Almost all the time people will know and have a feeling that something is not original. Don’t use phone photos unless there’s something special about it.

10) What do you like best about partnering with brands?

I think working with brands is awesome because you get to take their vision or mission and turn it into something of your own. You get to put heads together to create a style, movement or vision into place and you get to create that from scratch usually. It just allows myself to grow and the brand to grow and there isn’t really any limit to it. It’s whatever you can make it.
