Instagram Influencer Spotlight On: Yiling Ng @yxlxng

1) Tell us a little about yourself. What are you doing now and where do you come from?

Hello. I’m Yiling and I’m 19 this year. I was working in an architectural showroom right after I graduated from my O level year, and I’m currently awaiting for the commencement of my Year 1 in Lasalle College of the Arts. I’ve enrolled to study Design Communications to expand my knowledge and growth in design, and I also do freelance illustrations for leisure.

2) What are your topics of interest? What do you post on Instagram the most?

My topics of interest are mainly make up, fashion and art. The 3 definitely catches my attention the most as I have a strong passion for them. I usually post photos from outfit-of-the-day to more casual ‘current desk situation’ or my art works, but of course maintaining the solid grey to black theme I’ve developed and decided to follow through for my feed.

3) How did your Instagram name come about?

My Instagram name came from my own name, except that the vowels are ‘x’. I initially tried my luck to get my full name, but it was unfortunately taken up by other users. I’m pretty pleased with it now though, as it is short and sweet and easy for anyone to find.

4) What are some apps you use to edit your photos? Share with us your photo-editing routine!

I started editing a few years back, but now I feel like I’ve developed my own style and edit to my own perfection. I previously used VSCO cam, which is pretty popular, and also Line Camera for my art works to achieve that clean, white background I desire. Upon discovering Photoshop Express, I fell in love with it immediately! It managed to solve resolution problems I struggled with – it sharpens images so well without affecting the quality of the photo. I also use “Orange” premium filter for my photos as it cancels out most colours to grey-black and only draw attention to the most saturated parts of the photo which I grew to love.

5) Any Instagrammers whom you really like? Which Instagrammer inspires you the most?

The Instagrammers I love and look up to are TheLineUp, Julia Dang and Maya Nilsen. They are a fashion duo on YouTube, they make simple outfits look absolutely appealing. The photos on their feed are totally feed goals too, mainly minimalistic and “natural”.

6) If there’s one thing your fellow Instagrammers just gotta try now, what’s it gonna be?

I would totally recommend Photoshop Express. It is by far the best app I’ve ever used, and it’s really quick and easy. You can even achieve a high quality image as if taken by a DSLR by sharpening it to it’s full and reduce noise should it be too grainy. 7) What’s your favorite part about being an influencer?

I look forward to building connections the most. As an influencer, knowing people as well as having people know you is important. I love to engage, to meet new people, to step out of my comfort zone regularly. I’ll not only grow in my social circle but also but social skills.

8) What are some of your top tips to brands for running campaigns? How do you maintain authenticity?

My top tip is to stay true to yourself. Never run a campaign for a product you’re not confident will work well or simply don’t believe in. Have the integrity and confidence to promote what you love yourself so others can know and share the same interest. Once people know the product/brand well enough that it’s authentic and genuinely great, returning will not be difficult. There’s a high chance they will even share with their peers too!

9) What would your advice be on the importance of quality and original content?

My advice is to experiment. It’s not wrong to have inspirations or people you look up to, but know that at the end of the day, you do you. Keep trying different styles, and move on if it’s not for you. When you’re aware of what you dislike, you’ll be more motivated to start creating your own and develop your own sense of style.

10) What do you like best about partnering with brands?

I love partnering with not just brands but also people because I get to learn and explore new things I may never come across. Different ideas and style will come from both parties and the combination adds up to a more brilliant idea. Two is definitely better than one!
