Instagram Influencer Spotlight On: Matt Upham @mattupham

1) Tell us a little about yourself. What are you doing now and where do you come from?

As a native New Englander, I’ve always been an outdoorsy person. I especially loved hiking, skiing and snowboarding. Halfway through college, I realized that I had been to so many cool places in the wilderness, but had never really documented them.

From that day forth, I started with basic iPhone photography, taking photos on all my adventures. Traveling around Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts, I was able to start building a portfolio of my adventures.

As ski season approached, I needed a better way to capture content. Getting a GoPro was the next step. The GoPro was a great waterproof camera to capture my adventures in the cold weather!

After a full winter of adventuring, I needed a better and more creative tool to capture the area. I had always been interested in aerial shots, but didn’t have much money to go flying in a plane over the area. So I turned to drones. Getting my first drone was a huge success- it took a while to get good with it, but I was out flying between classes at least every other day.

Currently I’m on my second drone- a bigger and better upgrade to the first. It’s now my go to tool for different creative captures.

My goal is to keep exploring as much as possible, and to document my journey along the way. I love connecting with people, and have made some great real life connections through Instagram. Social media is a powerful tool!

2) What are your topics of interest? What do you post on Instagram the most?

Nature, drones, travel, skiing, snowboarding. I mostly do drone photos now, since they’re addicting, provide a new perspective, and the photos are super cool!

3) How did your Instagram name come about?

I used my personal name for this account (building a personal brand)

5) Any Instagrammers whom you really like? Which Instagrammer inspires you the most?

@donalboyd – he graduated from my school a few years ahead, and he’s doing some amazing stuff!

6) If there’s one thing your fellow Instagrammers just gotta try now, what’s it gonna be?

Try collaborating with people in real life whom you met on Insta: it’s fun!

7) What’s your favorite part about being an influencer?

Getting DM’s and comments and how my work has influenced my audience in a positive way!

8) What are some of your top tips to brands for running campaigns? How do you maintain authenticity?

Integrate products into your feed well. If you have a purpose with your Instagram (for me, getting outside and exploring nature), then integrate product features into that theme!

9) What would your advice be on the importance of quality and original content?

Quality is key. Never post bad pictures- only post your best!

10) What do you like best about partnering with brands?

It’s fun, you can make connections, and try cool products!
