Instagram Influencer Spotlight On: Mason Sperling @masonsperling

1) Tell us a little about yourself. What are you doing now and where do you come from?

I am a comedian, musician, dialect coach, director, foodie, and dog-lover who lives in Los Angeles! I’m originally from the San Francisco Bay Area. I went to college at UC Santa Barbara! I feel deeply connected to all 3 places. I spend most of my time making online content for YouTube (1.8M subs), TikTok (1.4M followers), and Instagram (68K followers). My most popular content is a series of comedic musical covers where I perform comedic impersonations. I typically focus my content on comedy, music, accents/dialects, and cooking! Now that the world is opening back up, I am also spending a fair amount of my time getting involved in creative projects like songwriting, filmmaking, and teaching!

2) What are your topics of interest? What do you post on Instagram the most?

My biggest interests are accents/dialects, comedy (improvised & sketch), music, and cooking. I try to reflect some of each of those interests on my Instagram because I want my followers to feel like they are getting to see all of my favorite interests! I’d say I post comedic videos of myself performing accents and music most often. I also love to teach, so sometimes I’ll make edu-tainment content about accents, music, or cooking!

3) How did your Instagram name come about?

It’s just my first and last name! I built a successful following on YouTube before I ventured into Instagram, so I had some name recognition by the time I created my Instagram profile. I’ve continued making that YouTube series through the present day! I also now have many different kinds of content that I make! It’s a lot of fun.

4) What are some apps you use to edit your photos? Share with us your photo-editing routine!

I’ve used FaceTune before, but I mostly just stick with the basic built-in photo editor on iOS (iPhone). I just adjust things like brightness or saturation in the photos app, and then post right to Instagram!

5) Any Instagrammers whom you really like? Which Instagrammer inspires you the most?

I must admit that I don’t follow or consume much social media from a follower perspective. So I’ll answer: Danny Padilla. He’s my YouTube partner and I think he’s better at social media than I am. @dannyjpadilla!

6) What’s your favorite part about being an influencer?

I feel very lucky that I feel like my ideas matter. And my messages matter. Because they really reach people who like to tell me about themselves in response! When I have an idea or want to post something, it’s very validating that others will engage with it and let it affect them. I also love that when I travel, there’s always a chance I can meet up with someone who follows me!

7) What’s your favorite part about StarNgage? Any exciting campaigns that you have joined through StarNgage before?

Any time I get to work with a platform that connects influencers and brands, I appreciate it. Reaching out to brands is no fun at all, but it’s a necessary part of the job. It’s not my forte, but I appreciate it when a platform like StarNgage comes along and specializes in something that I don’t feel very good at myself. I also appreciate that StarNgage has reached out to me a lot, and I feel like I’m getting special attention.

8) What are some of your top tips to brands for running campaigns? How do you maintain authenticity?

I think it’s very important NOT to control what the influencer says and does too much. Audiences are very sensitive when it comes to the feeling that they’re watching a contrived ad. They hate it, and disengage immediately. So don’t demand that influencers make content that follows a script, and don’t ask influencers to turn their post into an informational explainer about each product. It won’t do well! And then the brand will complain that the post didn’t perform as well as they’d hope, as if it’s a surprise! Influencers are experts in knowing what their own audience wants to see; collaborate with them so that they can provide a piece of content that their audience will like, and THEN figure out how your product can be integrated into it!

9) What would your advice be on the importance of quality and original content?

I know it’s hard to concretely prove or quantify, but I firmly believe that quality (in the eyes of the creator) is king. As in, the creator MUST believe that what they are creating is good and worth posting, no matter what anyone else says or thinks. If a creator feels like they’re posting something that isn’t good, then they are only creating content to please some other standard or group of people. That is not sustainable, even if it achieves short term success. It’s hollow and the holes will start to show soon enough. The only sustainable, long-term-success-oriented plans involve creators making sure that they truly stand by the quality of their posts. You should always feel like your content is underrated and ready for a bigger audience, rather than feeling like you have a big audience, but you aren’t sure how to please them. Your followers should always be telling you that your content deserves a bigger audience too! You need to know that you’re making good stuff.

10) What do you like best about partnering with brands?

Partnering with brands helps creators invest more in their audience, and in their work! When you have brands supporting your work, you can devote more to it. That means every successive sponsored post’s quality will continually go up, and so will engagement! For a creator, you’re always trending in a direction. If you are never sponsored, you are trending down in some way or another. Your work is less financially viable, and you’ll be incentivized to invest in other things that could offer you more financial stability. But if you partner with brands, you are set on a path of positive trending! You enter a virtuous cycle where the more you invest in your work, the more your fans are happy, and the more brands appreciate working with you! Everyone wins as long as you keep working hard, and influencers love to be in that position.
