1) Tell us a little about yourself. What are you doing now and where do you come from?
I’m a soon to be undergraduate student studying Human Resources Management with a dual minor in English and Psychology. Oddly enough, I’ll have to say that I’m definitely going to miss school but I’m excited for the future and finally #adulting. I’m currently an HR Coordinator and on the side, I devote my time and passion to Jennsemble – a personal style and fashion blog. I’m originally from Taiwan but I’m basically a Native New Yorker (living here 99.9% of my life hah!). I’m a proud mommy of two little furbabies (my bunnies).
2) What are your topics of interest? What do you post on Instagram the most?
I focus on fashion, lifestyle and beauty. My main concentration is fashion and what it means to me. The freedom of expression and creativity is such a nice breath of air. I’m all about comfort and style. I believe fashion isn’t just about brand names and expensive products. It’s more about taking something as simple as a white t-shirt and turning it into something more. If you can create something out of nothing, that’s the true beauty of fashion. Lifestyle and beauty add on to my feed as more supplemental focuses. Ultimately bits and pieces of me and my perspective.
3) How did your Instagram name come about?
I wanted to create a name that represented me. Jennsemble is a play on Jenn’s Ensemble, so the pronunciation is jenn-som-bull. Since my Instagram focuses on bits and pieces of who I am (style, perspective and thoughts) I thought this name was the perfect sum of it all. An ensemble is essentially parts that make a whole, so why not apply this to my branding?
4) What are some apps you use to edit your photos? Share with us your photo-editing routine!
I actually use Lightroom to edit my photos, but if I’m on the go and I’m editing on my phone, my go-to is Snapseed! It’s seriously the best editing app I’ve ever used. A lot of people use VSCO, but I’m not too fond of applying a filter to my photos. I like working with the raw deal more. I only touch brightness, shadows, sharpness, structure, and saturation!
5) Any Instagrammers whom you really like? Which Instagrammer inspires you the most?
There are plenty of Instagrammers that inspire me! It’d be hard to even name them, but if I had to mention one I’d have to say Jeanne Grey of @thegreylayers. She’s been a huge inspiration to me with substance and style. Finding the beauty in loving yourself, empowering others, staying true and turning pieces into something more are a few highlights. She’s turned scarves into tops and so much more. It’s great to see such creativity and passion.
6) If there’s one thing your fellow Instagrammers just gotta try now, what’s it gonna be?
Hmm this one’s hard because there’s so many things out there. In terms of Instagram, they just released the live video feature so I think that’s definitely something we should all try once. I have yet to try it out, but I caught a few and it’s such a fun, creative idea to better connect with your followers.
7) What’s your favorite part about being an influencer?
My favorite part is to meet other people who share the same interest as I do. I’m a pretty introverted person, so I’d have to say that this opened the door for me to become more social and get out there. I’ve met such incredible individuals.
8) What are some of your top tips to brands for running campaigns? How do you maintain authenticity?
I think my biggest tips are to keep in mind that influencers are pushing products to real people. They should definitely take into consideration that it’s not just a business transaction. They should be flexible to work with the suggestions and needs of each influencer and to be more lenient with what they’re asking. A caption shouldn’t be restricted to a specific pitch of a product, it should flow in the voice of the influencer marketing it.
I maintain authenticity by only accepting collaborations with brands that I agree with. If a brand is trying to sell a product that I don’t particularly believe in or like, I don’t want to push that to my followers. Sticking to things that you believe in is the best way to stay as authentic as possible.
9) What would your advice be on the importance of quality and original content?
Brand image is important and being an influencer is essentially a brand in itself. Having quality content is super important. I also believe in original content being key since it is your account and your voice. You should be able to share your own original content to express yourself and get word out.
10) What do you like best about partnering with brands?
Partnering with brands is great! I love building relationships with brands. I think that’s the best part because you see each other grow together. Having an ongoing relationship is also great when it comes to building trust and support to help each other.
