Instagram Influencer Spotlight On: Alex @indiealexx

1) Tell us a little about yourself. What are you doing now and where do you come from?

I’m currently a full-time student at sixth form, who enjoys photography, going to gigs and all things to do with indie music, as well as some clothing brands. I regularly go on walks and trips with my amazing girlfriend, where I try to capture some decent photographic content.

2) What are your topics of interest? What do you post on Instagram the most?

Photography has been a passion of mine for many, many years, so I try posting some professional looking photos from time-to-time. I also try going to as many gigs as I can where I proceed to upload some pictures. I also like taking pictures from my everyday life, as well as other things like clothing.

3) How did your Instagram name come about?

It was originally a nickname. I had my Twitter handle as ‘IndieAlexx’ for a number of months, before temporarily changing it to ‘indiealexx’. I became fond of the handle, and on Twitter gained thousands of followers with this @ and feel as if I’m connected to it in many ways. People even recognise me with the name, in public! Even my friends sometimes call me ‘indie Alex’.
Originally, my Instagram handle was a boring, ‘itsalexvasey’, before I quickly changed it to the current one.
‘@indiealex’ was taken on Twitter, but I actually prefer the extra ‘x’; it adds character.

4) What are some apps you use to edit your photos? Share with us your photo-editing routine!

I try to keep editing to a minimal, and therefore just use Instagram’s editing tools. For my professional, exam photos, I used a lot of Photoshop, to create certain vibes for the photos.
Usually, I just alter things like the brightness and LUX of my photos to give them richer, enhanced colours. I love taking photos of sunsets, however, this can be frustrating, as they NEVER come out life-like, unless I use my DSLR camera. However, I tend to not upload the photos taken on this camera, as I like to keep a collection of these, to myself.

5) Any Instagrammers whom you really like? Which Instagrammer inspires you the most?

To be honest, my main inspirations are musicians, bands and photographers/artists who are not necessarily directly linked to Instagram. For example, René Magritte is a main inspiration, as well as the whole aesthetic of The 1975 (who often feature in my photographs).

6) If there’s one thing your fellow Instagrammers just gotta try now, what’s it gonna be?

This sounds like such a cliché, but BE YOURSELF. Take pictures of YOUR interests, YOUR favourite things, and don’t do things to appease others or just to fit in. Often, Instagrammers who stand out most, are ones who have their own style.

7) What’s your favorite part about being an influencer?

The opportunities you get, as well as having the chance to try out some amazing products and clothing.

8) What are some of your top tips to brands for running campaigns? How do you maintain authenticity?

Never bombard people’s feeds by posting obvious adverts for your brand. Keep advertising subtle, but effective. Too much O-T-T branding may lead to people to stay away from your brand. Keep posts interesting, too.
Competitions are an effective way of introducing people to your brand.

9) What would your advice be on the importance of quality and original content?

It is vital that products are unique and meaningful. There are too many big-name brands who produce lots of the same. By keeping your products quirky and trendy, people will fall in love with the brand.
In the age of technology, creating content that no one has done, is near impossible, but by keeping your audience fully engaged, anything can happen.

10) What do you like best about partnering with brands?

You get amazing chances to try out cool products and also, helping small independent brands you love, grow because of you, is such a great feeling. Having your name connected to your favourite brands is really rewarding, too.
