Navel piercings are very anatomy based. In fairness, all piercings are. For Navel piercings, there are few key things we look for to determine whether or not this will be a safe piercing for you. 1. The depth. There needs to be adequate depth/space within the Navel, that allows a comfortable area for the jewelry to sit inside, to eliminate the risk of pressure or friction. “Outties”, narrow, or shallow Navels are not ideal for traditional Navel jewelry/piercings. 2. The shape and definition of the upper “lip” or “shelf” of the navel. If this area is too flat, or curved, it can cause issues in healing and lead to rejection. 3. The natural angle of the Navel. Navels are NEVER symmetrical. Quite often, they tilt more to one side, sit on an angle, are longer on one side, etc. This can affect how the Navel can be pierced, and should always be taken into consideration. Before having your Navel pierced, your piercer should always thoroughly evaluate the area prior to moving ahead with the procedure. There are seemingly small aspects of this that can cause big problems, like rejection and scarring. If a traditional navel piercing isn’t a safe option for you, something like a “floating” Navel may be. However again, this is all very anatomy based, and your piercer should go over this all with you in greater depth at the time of your appointment/consultation. Remember, a good piecer will tell you no when they need to, explain why, and offer alternatives- even if that means helping you decide on a different piercing than what you came in for. ❤️
