On Monday 5 October @fionabannerakathevanitypress dropped a 1.5 ton Full Stop sculpture from the font Klang onto the doorstep of DEFRA and the Home Office.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Fiona has made three Full Stop sculptures that she and Greenpeace have deployed as part of a non violent direct action to hold the UK government accountable for protecting our Oceans.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Two of the Full Stops were deployed in the Dogger Bank as part of an underwater barrier to prevent destructive fishing practices and the third full stop was delivered to the government building responsible for the environment. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ It’s an action against illegal and destructive industrial fishing. #ThrowbackThursday⁠ ⁠ YSP creates opportunities for people to make their own sculptures, under the guidance of established and highly-skilled artists such as Marcia Bennett-Male, a London-based stone carver and letter cutter whose own practice is inspired by food and all things culinary.⁠ ⁠ Marcia is a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors and this week shares her memories of being a part of YSP: ⁠ ⁠ “I started working as a stone carving tutor with the YSP Learning Team in 2004. Since then I’ve seen many fabulous exhibitions including ‘Henry Moore: Back to a Land’ in 2015 and ‘Chiharu Shiota: Beyond Time’ in the Chapel in 2018.⁠ ⁠ However, it was the giant alabaster heads in the Underground Gallery, the work of Jaume Plensa, that received an audible gasp from me. As a stone carver, I would normally turn my nose up at work that wasn’t entirely handmade, but the use of a laser machine on the stone worked in its favour, adding to the experience. Andy Goldsworthy's 'Outclosure' in Round Wood physically illustrates the act of making places inaccessible.⁠ ⁠ Issues of land access have long informed Goldsworthy’s practice. The Inclosure Consolidation Act of 1801 endorsed the ongoing practice of enclosing common land. This forced peasants to sell to those more powerful, resulting in large numbers of dispossessed migrants.⁠ ⁠ The piece was built on land owned by Job Earnshaw & Bros Ltd, with their kind permission, adding further to the ideas of ownership and accessibility behind the work.⁠ ⁠ Dry stone walls are a significant, traditional feature of the farmed landscape, particularly in northern Britain. Bretton Hall on the #YSP estate was designed and built in 1720 by its owner, Sir William Wentworth.⁠ ⁠ Diana Beaumont, who inherited Bretton Hall in 1792, then more than doubled the size of the mansion in the early 19th century. However, the estate then passed on to Diana's son, Thomas Wentworth Beaumont, who auctioned off everything that reminded him of his mother due to their turbulent relationship.⁠ ⁠ In 1948 Wentworth Henry Canning Beaumont sold much of the estate to West Riding County Council and a year later the mansion became a training college for teachers of art, music and drama, which later became part of the University of Leeds.⁠ ⁠ The college grew from the original 56 pupils to over 2,000 in 2007. Many students have gone on to exciting careers in the arts and education, and some have become household names such as Sir Ken Robinson, Mark Thomas, Richard O’Brian and John Godber.⁠ ⁠ When the college closed in 2007, the buildings were sold to Wakefield Council and YSP took over the management of the whole 500-acre landscape.
