On Tuesday the sun shone and Chianti Classico came to Edinburgh for the first EVER trade tasting in Scotland. 🍷 It was a fantastic event – super stylish as expected form Italy and it was great to have Daniel Stojcic join us to present a fascinating masterclass. 🇮🇹 Thank you Chianti Classico and the team for a very memorable and invaluable event.

Does Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG pair well with food and could you tire of it? 🥂 Personally having been completely spoilt in the region for 3 days and enjoyed numerous dishes carefully paired to a different Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG, I don’t think I’d ever tire of it. I was genuinely surprised that I wasn’t yearning for a glass of red wine such is the attraction of these superb sparkling wines. 🥂 With good levels of acidity sparkling wine is great with dishes with high acidity. A classic being a summer salad with vinaigrette. Likewise the acidity will cut through richness in food such as a Hollandaise sauce or seafood such as scallops. A favourite pairing is fish and chips. This of course combines both. You have the richness and then almost whatever you add such as lemon juice, vinegar, ketchup, tartare sauce or brown sauce gives the acidity. 🥂 There are numerous producers to look out for who each produces their own character. However, there are three main styles of Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG to look out for; 🥂 Extra Brut can have up to 6g/l residual sugar and is often bone dry with zero residual sugar. This is the purest style generally made from the producer’s the best cuvées. It can be an acquired taste for many. These are best as an aperitif or a more delicate dish. 🥂 Brut which is the most popular style has up to 12 g/l residual sugar and has the ability to stand up to a more complex main course dish. 🥂 Extra Dry has a touch more residual sugar, between 12-17g/l and is perhaps the most versatile for food pairing. With a bit more sweetness it’s possibly the style to enjoy with a sweet dessert. 🥂 Don’t be fooled into thinking 17g/l is sweet - some ginger beers have 150g/l sugar! 🥂 So, next time you’re looking for a sparkling wine, treat yourself to a Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG & enjoy it with a meal. ⚠️ But be warned you might need to be ready for how delicious it is & have a second bottle at the ready! 📷 credit & thank you to the fantastic @jacopomazzeophoto for the profile picture of me 🥂

A truly insightful visit to Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG. 🥂 Repeating the official name for this premium Prosecco might be a challenge and perhaps it can be likened to the challenge and hard work which goes into producing these superb sparkling wines. 🇮🇹 Having taken a walk up into the Veneto hills on the afternoon I arrived and later seen the sun set and moon rise, it was clear there was nothing ordinary about this beautiful region with its steep hillsides. 🥂 As you can imagine most of the vineyard work is done by hand - there's no chance of machine harvesters scaling these steep hillsides. 🇮🇹 Many of these producers are families who have cared for their vineyards for generations. The chance of some of the older generations retiring from vineyard work is slim. They're hard grafters who will go on forever. 🥂 So what really makes Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG so special? 🇮🇹 The terroir, microclimate, vineyard management, attention to detail, people and of course the magic of this beautiful region all these play their part. However, at the end of the day, the proof is in the glass, so have a taste for yourself soon.

If like mine your hydrangeas are fading along with all other colour in your garden then you’ll enjoy this. Laithwaite’s Blanc de Cabernet Brut is part of their Kew Series which highlights forgotten varietals with the aim of encouraging plant diversity around the world. This delicious sparkling white from Moldova is made using red Cabernet Sauvignon and will be sure to bring back summer memories. Deliciously elegant with plenty of floral aromas and characters and a touch of white peach. Available from @laithwaites.wine from just £12.99 Spring will be here before you know it!
