The darkness will show the light.” Renowned for her “Nordic-noir” style of photography, wedding and fine-art photographer Frøydis Geithus (@froydisgeithus) focuses on light and the beauty of nature to shape the wedding stories she photographs. Read on to get to know him: When and how did you get into photography? ↪️ I borrowed my father's manual, analogue camera when I was 12 and I loved the possibility of capturing things and moments that had moved me and bring them back home. The sensation lingered on, and I noticed that the experiences I had photographed also could move and inspire others. How long have you been a Nikon photographer? And why did you choose Nikon? ↪️ I searched for the best, most durable professional system for image-making in the world and was lucky and privileged enough to enter into a partnership with Nikon first time in 1999 and that contract lasted till 2020. Short break and now really happy to be back in the Nikon family. My first camera was the Nikon FM2 and later the F5 and F6 analogue cameras and a wide range of the best lenses and accessories available. What is the most challenging part of being a photographer? ↪️ For me, it’s about staying true to my cause, to my photographic language and letting that evolve freely over time. It’s easy to get carried away by opportunities but the core needs to be there, in order to be trustworthy and to stand out. I really have two parallel worlds that I dive into. One is the world of storytelling based on science interpreted through my eyes as a conservation photographer, filmmaker and storyteller. The other one is a contemporary photography artist using the same photographic tools but with other techniques, producing a very different result and conceptualization for a different audience. What are some of the most important skills a photographer should have? ️️↪️ I think it depends on what you do, who you are, your field, ambition etc. Timing, sense of space, lines, light, texture; aesthetics. Composition. Playfulness, purpose, patience and passion. As our boat chugged toward the island I was quick to see potential, but realised my vision would be tricky aboard a small boat in turbulent sea swell at the foot of the towering cliffs. The potential I saw was in the sculpted sandstone, rising 180 metres (590 feet) above the North Sea, hosting more than 22,000 northern gannets breeding on its ledges carved by the elements. Each curve was softly draped in streaks of white guano which exaggerated the meandering shape, and within each hourglass sat one or two gannets. I wanted a courting pair, but amongst the 22,000, I couldn’t find one. Then, I spotted the perfect pair, isolated on a lower ledge, intertwining their necks and framed meticulously by the streaks of guano. In a few seconds the boat aligned with the rocks, everything came together - the courting gannets drew up against a dark hollow on the guano-painted curves of sandstone - and I got my shot, enhancing the complementary shapes in black and white.
