Our Work on writing stamina went perfectly! My ultimate writing center proved to be “the best thing all week” for my 2nd graders. That was the best thing I heard all week. For them to be excited to write was exactly what I needed to hear. Giving them a choice of what to write is key. The Daily 5 is the best thing to ever happen to my classroom all those years ago. If you google “Seusstastic Daily 5” a ton of my old blog posts will come up with a ton of ideas. The book is a super easy read, I highly recommend it. One of my favorite things to do in the beginning of the year is to set my Daily 5 expectations. Day 1 of read to self we made it 1 minute and 8 seconds. I thought for sure we wouldn’t make it past 30 seconds but they did it. Day two we regressed but day 3, we made it to 3 minutes! Setting your silent reading expectations in the beginning of the year takes time and a ton of patience. If you expect the kids not to chat, you shouldn’t be either. I try not to move around too much so I don’t distract them and be the cause of breaking their stamina. Eventually, when we make it to 15 minutes, hello word work which is my Candy Land games. I literally can’t wait to get them trained enough to start small groups. We aren’t ready at all right now. My goal is after Labor Day. How soon do you start small groups? Several coworkers and I whipped this up right before our meet the teacher night. The kids pass it all day but so do the teachers. Teaching is a thankless job. If you’re feeling absolutely defeated since school started just remember to be awesome for those kids. They love you. They need you. They want to be there. Our district is mandated masks. Do you know I haven’t heard one complaint from a student in 2 weeks? They just want to be in school with their friends and with their teachers. I’m thankful I haven’t heard any complaints from parents BUT teachers in my district are being bashed al over social media and at board meetings. What is this teaching your children? We are stressed like we’ve never been before. We care and love our students. We are advocating for them but we need someone to advocate for us. Every time I go on FB i just feel more defeated. I’m truly grateful that I have a room full of kids that want to be there. I have extremely positive parents as well. We teach our kids to treat each other how you want to be treated. We need to start listening to each other and being respectful. The kids are watching and we need to model good behavior. Thank you teachers and staff. Can you even? I figured I better post Fletcher’s 4 month pics before he turns 5 months. I’m going to be very transparent here. Going from 2-3 has been rough. It’s been 6 years since we’ve had a puppy and forgot about all the work that comes with it. My husband and I are weak when it comes to crate training. As soon as we hear a cry or whimper we run and get him. He’s been in our bed since day 2. That adorable crate I got with the barn door is basically collecting dust. 😂 Fletcher is such a good boy and really doesn’t damage a thing. I do try and leave for several hours at a time to help with separation anxiety and just to watch him on our cameras to see what he does. Do you know what they do? Sleep. That’s it. The boys all get along great and Fletcher is helping them both stay young and active which is what we wanted. Happy 4 months Fletcher boy!
