A bee's eye view? 🐝 Taken from the roof of the Pierhead, this view looking over the Senedd to skyline beyond might have been seen by our bees as they get about their day. The Pierhead has been the home of our rooftop beehives since July 2018, that are regularly monitored and cared for by our team of staff volunteers. #Wales #Senedd #CardiffBay
Sustainability was at the heart of the Senedd building design. Here’s a quick look at some of the sustainability features of the building…. 🌍 The building uses a ground source heat pump. This clever system uses the earth’s temperature to heat and cool the building. 🥵 A biomass boiler is used for extra heating in winter. Using near zero-carbon wood chips from sustainably-sourced timber as fuel, this keeps the carbon dioxide emissions of the building to a minimum. 💡 Lights have been upgraded to LEDs, so far they’ve saved more than 60 tonnes of carbon being produced! 🌧 The roof is specially designed to collect rain water. This and other water-saving methods mean our monthly use of mains water is about the same as a large house! . . . #Senedd #SeneddWales #WelshParliament #Parliament #Wales
Not only is the funnel a beautiful design of the Senedd building, it also has a practical role, bringing in daylight and fresh air. 💨 At the top is the cowl – an important part of the buildings natural ventilation system. The cowl is a unique bit of sustainable equipment and based on ancient Persian technology! The cowl changes direction with the wind, drawing fresh air through the Siambr. ☀ The funnel also lets in natural daylight. 89 reflective tubes on the inside help with this, and the mirror that sits at the top weighs 150kg. 🪵 The outside of the funnel is covered in red cedar wood. The wood contains a natural self-preserving oil, meaning it won't need treating for at least 100 years! . . . #Senedd #SeneddWales #WelshParliament #Parliament #Wales

📣 Upcoming exhibition This summer the Senedd will proudly host the closing presentation of ‘Undo Things Done’, Sean Edwards’ internationally acclaimed exhibition for Wales in Venice 2019. The exhibition draws on Edwards’ experience of growing up on a council estate in Cardiff in the 1980s. Capturing and translating what he calls a condition of ‘not expecting much’ into a shared visual language; one that evokes a way of living familiar to a great number of people. The exhibition was commissioned by Arts Council of Wales with lead partner Tŷ Pawb, and guest curator Marie-Anne McQuay of the Bluecoat. Be the first to see this internationally acclaimed exhibition at the Senedd. What happens at a Plenary meeting? 🤔 Plenary is the term used to describe the meeting of all 60 Members in the Siambr, the Senedd’s debating chamber. Plenary takes place twice a week, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and is chaired by the Llywydd. Plenary is one of the ways for Members of the Senedd to represent the people of Wales, hold the Welsh Government to account and make laws for Wales. They do this through questions to Ministers, debates and voting on issues affecting everyday life in Wales. There are rules outlining how Senedd proceedings should be conducted, these are called standing orders. They outline the way Members should behave, how draft laws called Bills are processed and debates organised. As chairs of Plenary meetings, the Llywydd and Deputy Presiding Officer are responsible for maintaining order. You can watch Plenary meetings from the public gallery in the Senedd. Due to the current restrictions, the capacity of the public gallery is limited and booking is required. You can also watch meetings live and on demand on Senedd TV. . . . #Senedd #SeneddWales #WelshParliament #Wales
After a Senedd Election, one of the first tasks for Members is to elect a Presiding Officer, also known as the Llywydd, and a Deputy. Elin Jones MS was elected as the Llywydd, and David Rees MS as Deputy Presiding Officer. The Llywydd mirrors the role of Speakers in parliaments across the world, and is an impartial role. They’re responsible for chairing Plenary meetings, and representing the Senedd and Wales’ interests on a national and international stage. The Deputy Presiding Officer alternates with the Llywydd in chairing Plenary meetings. . . . #Senedd #SeneddWales #WelshParliament #Parliament #Wales
