✂️My former student @d_ntinda had her MA show last week. She was studying theMA Fashion creative pattern cutting pathway @ntu_ma_fashiontextilesknit. We worked together to create a pattern based on the wonderful Alaia jumpsuit from the 90s. We started our sessions online and then moved to in person as techniques got more complicated. ✂️ A tailored jacket block was developed using the brilliant Winifred Aldrich Pattern Cutting For Women’s Tailored Jackets. We then moved on to developing the trouser block - it’s the same one I show you how to make in my @domestika_en course. The two blocks were then combined to create a pattern of the jumpsuit. The jacket was fully tailored so lots of different patterns were developed to accommodate canvas, lining and facings. Dora rose to the challenge on this one. ✂️Hello, just checking in to say hi to my regular followers and any new followers. I had a great weekend. On Saturday I finally finished a piece of art I started during the first lockdown - pic 5. It was a photograph I took from my balcony of my hydrangea reflected in my mirror. Weird composition you might think but the mirror was on the table in my flat, I was lying down on the balcony listening to some music and saw the reflection. I grabbed my phone, gyrated on the balcony to get the best angle and took some pics. I manipulated this one by blurring the mirror frame in photoshop and adding a greyish background. Fast forward to 2023 I printed the photograph on beautiful textured Hahnemuhle German Etching. I then painted some textured board, glued the photograph in the centre and finished it with pigment, structure gel and matte varnish. ✂️ My love of fashion and art will never diminish. (Should I call myself a fartist?) Great art really excites me and has done since I was a kid who preferred to paint, sew and make things instead of reading, like my sisters. On Sunday we visited the @treasurehousefair which is very similar to Frieze and Frieze Masters. My favourite painting was by Howard Hodgkin. His work really mesmerises me and draws me in. I find it meditative and soothing, almost like stepping into a vortex. ✂️ Let’s talk about my dress. I made it about 5 years ago in surplus fabric from a job I did for a Cats - musical- production. It was originally a shirt dress based on a design I’d done in the 90’s. I didn’t like it after wearing it once and it sat in my wardrobe for ages. I refashioned it by draping the skirt, adding the white bib, shortening the sleeves blah blah blah and basically turning it into a completely new dress over five years. ✂️ Rest in peace Ms Turner. My favourite track by Tina Turner has always been River Deep - Mountain High. The sound was orchestral and built up to huge crescendos. This was thanks to Phil Spector who developed ‘the wall of sound’. The 21 piece orchestra sat on one side of the studio and literally created a wall of sound. It cost $22,000 to produce in 1966, a huge sum in those days. ✂️My online student, Dora is studying for her MA in fashion. She contacted me in 2021 to enquire about 1-2-1 classes. Tuition started a couple of months ago as she found she needed support with pattern cutting for various items. ✂️ This dress is one of the items we’ve been working on and will soon progress to tailored jackets and pieces for her final collection. ✂️ I love all of the garments she needs support with especially the tailored pieces. ✂️ I tailor make her tuition to her needs and we started with full size block development for dresses, trousers and jackets. ✂️I spent a total of three hours searching for the pattern for the white coat in my drawers at home. I was convinced I had it but I was wrong 😔. I could remake the pattern but… ✂️ It was designed in the 90’s and made up part of my final collection before moving on to maternity wear. I need to re-make it plus the yellow puffa for an exhibition in Somerset House in September. ✂️ Thankfully my graders, Gradeline came to the rescue as they’d kept the pattern on their old system. ✂️Hello, I’m beaming in the pic as I got some lovely feedback from my In Practice online session @vamuseum. I love teaching online and in person but hadn’t done any online classes for a little while. My camera was not behaving so I ended up doing the draft upside down 😳.
