Last Friday, on 27 August 2021, we marked the last day of operations at #ParkHotelClarkeQuay, a hotel that is very close to the hearts of many. @parkhotelgroup tendered for this site in 2006, built the hotel over 24 months and officially opened it in 2009. Subsequently, she was sold to Ascendas Hospitality Trust in 2013 and continued to operate as one of our flagships until today. As we close this chapter, we want to give a shout out to all the team members who have contributed to her achievements as well as the guests we have welcomed through her doors over the years. Did you know that the "Bak Kut Teh" we savour today was once known as "Coolie Tea"? This dish is believed to have been introduced by Chinese coolies who once toiled along the Singapore River and contributed to Singapore's prominent rise as a global premier port hub today. Coolie Tea then merely contained pork bones, garlic cloves and occasional scraps of meat on good days. It was a staple breakfast for the coolies who needed this nourishment before embarking on their backbreaking tasks. Today, we continue to enjoy the essence of this dish, albeit a luxe version with prime meat cuts as society gained affluence over time.
