Hi there! I’m Morag Gamble. I’m an educator, gardener, designer, [pr]activist, youtuber, podcaster, writer and mother.  Living and working in an eco-village on Gubbi Gubbi country in Southeast Queensland in Australia, I’m surrounded by my family, our permaculture garden and a wonderful ecological community. When I was a kid in the 1980s, my dad used to tell me about this wonderful idea he’d heard about on the radio - about living simply and with care for people and the planet. I remember him speaking about it as something that really made a whole lot of sense. These were the seeds that started me on my own journey using permaculture. So what is permaculture? It’s about living regeneratively & peacefully - learning again how to live a one-planet way of life. Permaculture is guided by a set of nature-inspired principles framed by three core ethics - earth care, people care and fair share. Most people know of permaculture as gardening, but I’ve found that you can use permaculture to positively transform all areas of your life! I see permaculture as a new way of designing food systems, homes & communities, participating in culture/education/the world, and contributing locally & globally by interacting with the earth and each other. My goal is to share my knowledge and experience from teaching permaculture around the world over 3 decades - showing people how in create resilient livelihoods and communities through the lens of permaculture design & education, and exploring together how to support those in the Global South who are being impacted the most. Practicing permaculture is positive and practical action for one planet living and peace. I believe that the way we live and the work we do can (and should) make a positive contribution to society and support ecological regeneration. My passion for permaculture is channeled through the @permacultureeducationinstitute; as well as @ethosfoundation – my not-for-profit aimed at providing free permaculture training to women and children in Africa, particularly in displaced communities. So if you want to learn more - keep in the loop. I hope my content is useful for you! Happy permaculturing, Morag x

Did you know kids study for free at the Permaculture Education Institute? Founder and director, Morag Gamble, firmly believes in the benefits of teaching children to love, protect and understand our natural world. That’s why she lets kids study permaculture for free. Whether your child is homeschooled, unschooled, or attends school five days a week – if they have a passion and curiosity for nature, they can join our course. We automatically accept one child age 12+ to join the Permaculture Educators Program for free when their parent or guardian signs up for the course. This means you can study together, online and at your own pace. And, you’ll both receive internationally-recognised qualifications upon graduation. Learning about permaculture can open up a world full of possibilities for both young and old, but participating in this transformative educational journey together is that much more special. For more information about the course, you can book 15 minutes to chat directly with Morag. Or, you can enrol today. In my home, we love dips! Hummus is a favourite – especially because you can get creative with it and add all kinds of flavours and garden herbs into it 🌿 Making simple, natural dips and other snacks from scratch is a cheap, #plasticfree and healthy way to feed my family. So, on that note, here is my basic recipe to make hummus for #plasticfreejuly Ingredients: - Chickpeas (choose the amount based on how much you would like to make) - 2 tbsp Tahini - Pinch of salt - 1 x clove of garlic (peeled and chopped) - Half a lime or lemon - Approx 2 tbsp Organic Olive Oil The process: 1. Soak the dried chickpeas overnight. 2. Cook the soaked chickpeas for about 20 to 30minutes until they are soft. 3. Put the cooked chickpeas into your blender. 4. Add enough water just to pass the level of chickpeas (you can add more later if the consistency isn’t right) 5. Pour in the Tahini and olive oil. 6. Sprinkle in a pinch of salt and add the garlic. 7. Cut the lime or lemon in half and squeeze the juice of one half into the blender (save the other half for the end in case you have to add extra liquid) 8. Blend this all together until nicely combined. 9. Have a taste test and see if it might need anything added! Also note the consistency and add more liquid (either more lemon/lime juice or water depending on flavour) if you would like. If this is too runny for you, then I recommend adding less liquid next time. You can also add more chickpeas at this stage to thicken the texture if you would like. Reposted from my Youtube channel. I found this Hairpin Banksia (Banksia spinulosa) on my walk through the Maroochy Botanic Gardens the other day - did you know that you can eat it? It's a deliciously edible plant that you can: - Roast the young flower spikes - Eat the sweet nectar - Steep the leaves in water to make tea - Eat the white bases of the leaves This species is also loved by native wildlife and pollinators and the best thing is that propagation from seed and cuttings is easy! Did you know, you can also create your own native garden with heaps of edible plants with me in the Incredible Edible Garden Course? 🌿 (link in bio)

Did you know you can grow your own hair conditioner? No harmful chemicals, you get to save on money and you don’t have to buy conditioner in plastic containers that add to plastic waste. As part of #plasticfreejuly this year I'm sharing a plastic-free idea (reposted from my youtube channel) every day that can change small habits into easy, healthy & sustainable practices. Bathrooms are typically full of lots of plastic bottles and 80% of these get thrown away even though they are recyclable. So, I’ve made it a mission to look for more ways to get rid of my bathroom plastic usage 🛁 Check out a more detailed hair care routine from the link in my bio. #growyourown #permaculture #haircare #plasticfree #moraggamble #ourpermaculturelife #naturalcosmetics #naturalhair #aloevera

Have you ever read the Round the World section in PIP Magazine? Ever since the debut issue, I've been collating permaculture projects from around the world and writing them up into the map you can always find in the front half of the magazine. I'm heavily inspired by the breadth and diversity of applications of permaculture around the world and I love discovering & sharing opportunities for purposeful travel. I've travelled and worked with to many of these places myself and they never cease to amaze me. And for the past year we’ve partnered with @pipmagazineau so that you can find @permacultureeducationinstitute on the back cover!

My dad has been a gardener and composter for as long as I can remember. It was so great to grow up in a house where everything biodegradable went back to the soil. But recently he’s changed how he’s doing it 😀. He used to just have a compost pile down the back and every now and then distribute it. Now, at 86, he still loves being out in the garden, and tending to his orchard, but he’s decided to try my simple in-situ composting strategies. Here, right in amongst the trees, he’s placed a compost bin, so the compost is being made right where he needs it- enlivening the soil from the moment the composting begins. #composting #moraggamble #ourpermaculturelife #permaculture #permacultureeducationinstitute #compost #growyourownfood #homegrown #homegarden #biophilia #soil

How wonderful it is to be able to eat food without having to throw anything away! #plasticfreejuly Yes, even the skin (aka their natural packaging)... I love pumpkin for so many reasons (as many of you know), but one of the biggest reasons is its home-grown packaging. A lot of people look at the skin of the pumpkin as inedible, because it's thick and often not the nicest part to eat. You may be throwing your pumpkin skins in the compost, a worm farm or even the general bin… but there’s another option. Check out some more recipes to do with pumpkin from the link in my bio! Tea ☕? Happy #PlasticFreeJuly - will you be taking the challenge? This is a live I filmed last July, but still relevant as ever - it still shocks me how ingrained single-use plastics are in our everyday lives. What better to do with cheese than to make a cheesecake! Last week when my daughter and husband went milking the cows at our local cooperative dairy, they came back with 17 litres of milk. (ft. Greta the cow on the second slide) So we bottled it up, made some yoghurt and cream cheese - leaving us with a lot of cheese which was whipped into a cheesecake only half a day after being milked! It really reminded me of how close we can get to the source of our food - and how far we can travel from it. The feeling of eating a delicious cake that I know was created from milk 100 metres up the road is like nothing I'd get from a store-bought one. Even the biscuit base was made from local ingredients from our food coop. After talking with Helena Norberg-Hodge in my last film club, localisation seems more important than ever - localising our food, our homes, our livelihoods. And still thinking big picture.
