The “Charter Oak” history and its symbolism as a defiance to tyranny are incredibly powerful. The steadfast attitude of the people to not comply are a testament to what it means to me to be American. The Connecticut Colony received the “Connecticut Charter” from King Charles II. The year was 1662, and this Royal Charter gave incredible freedoms for the people of the colony of Connecticut. Although Connecticut was owned and governed by England the people were allowed to elect local officials. And they were allowed to make many of their own rules. When Charles II died in 1685, James II, his brother, became King and demanded the return of Royal Charters. The colonists refused to give up the charter. While in a meeting with the Governor of the Dominion, after hours of debate over that future of the charter and really the future of Connecticut, all the candles blow out. In the confusion the charter disappeared. It was hidden in the trunk of an old oak tree and remained there until James II was overthrown in 1689. This same charter was used to govern Connecticut until 1818! The charter oak fell during a storm in 1856. It was estimated to be 1,000 years old. Pieces of it remain on display with the Connecticut Historical Society. I bought some nice commemorative coins at this show. They seem to be increasingly becoming popular, have a tremendous history, often have incredibly low mintages and have barely seen a price increase in years. Big deal of circulated Morgans and peace dollars got offered to me at the Cromwell show today. The trouble is these are all counterfeit. Counterfeit circulated coins. Including many better dates.
