Two Austin philanthropists and former journalists are pledging $1.5 million over three years to KUT and @KUTX to improve and sustain news and music services, and to honor the legendary host John Aielli. The gift from Lynne Dobson and Greg Wooldridge is the largest outright gift the station has ever received. It will support Texas Capitol beat reporting and expand the staff of the station’s daily news magazine, @Texas_Standard. More than 40 journalists currently work in the newsroom on the local news, Texas Standard, and on digital and multimedia teams. Their gift, via The Tejemos Foundation, will allow for the naming of KUT’s community room after Aielli, who hosted the quirky “Eklektikos” music show on KUT 90.5 and later on KUTX 98.9. He died last year after 56 years on the air. Debbie Hiott, KUT and KUTX general manager, said “this contribution is transformative in helping KUT meet local demand for service and regional growth.“ Dobson and Wooldridge have more than 50 years of journalism experience between them in newsrooms across the country, including the Austin American-@Statesman in the late ‘80s through 2002, where Lynne was a staff photographer and Greg was a sports and features editor. They also worked in the Dobson family business, Whataburger Restaurants, for many years in community and nonprofit outreach, communications and public relations. Lynne is a 1979 honors graduate of the School of Journalism at the University of Texas College of Communication and worked as a "Daily Texan" staff photographer. She was inducted into the 2023 Daily Texan Hall of Fame. “Music, nature, parks and green spaces are the lifeblood of Austin, and truth in journalism and social justice are the lifeblood of society. KUT provides a voice for all of this,” says Wooldridge. Tap the link in our bio for more from KUT’s press release. Photo: Marsha Miller

KUTX is partnering with @centerfortxmusichistory to bring you This Week in Texas Music History, where we shine a light on the people, places and things that make Texas Music so special. On October 27, 1957, Buddy Holly and the Crickets released their second single, “Oh, Boy” backed with “Not Fade Away.” The young band of Buddy Holly, Jerry Allison, Joe Mauldin, and Niki Sullivan had taken inspiration from Elvis Presley’s Lubbock tour dates in 1955, and set out to be the next stars of rock ‘n’ roll. They got their first shot at recording with Owen Bradley at Decca in Nashville, but only found the sound they wanted in the Clovis, New Mexico studio of the independent-minded Norman and Vi Petty. Their first Petty-produced single “That’ll Be the Day” came out in May 1957. “Oh Boy”/“Not Fade Away” followed. Petty attributed the record to “The Crickets” rather than “Buddy Holly” because they were officially still under contract with Decca. Buddy Holly and the Crickets, “Not Fade Away” As early as 1958, “That’ll Be the Day” was the song that Liverpool’s Quarrymen (soon to be the Beatles) chose to record when they first had access to studio equipment. “Not Fade Away,” too, skipped across the Atlantic. The Rolling Stones’ 1964 cover was their first top-ten UK hit, as well as their first American single. It is hard to overestimate Holly’s influence in rock and roll, even among Texas music historians prone to such things. For those looking to dig deeper, Lubbock’s Buddy Holly Center is well worth a road trip to learn a bit more. 📽️KUTX Song of the Day: Katy Kirby: “Cubic  Zirconia”📽️ We’ve got just one more ACL Pop-Up to share with you for Song of the Day, and this one comes with an exciting bit of news. It comes courtesy of indie-folk-rock singer @katykirbs, who was raised just about an hour’s drive from Austin out in Spicewood before relocating to Nashville for college, and most recently, Brooklyn.  And the momentum has been especially strong in the post-COVID era, considering Kirby just played both Sundays of ACL Fest. Those ACL gigs are bookended between two new singles – “Cubic Zirconia” from the tail end of August – and, just a few hours old, “Table”. The latter arrived this morning alongside an announcement for Katy Kirby’s sophomore full-length “Blue Raspberry,” set for release January 26th. But if you couldn’t make it out to Zilker and want a taste of the new LP, you can harvest its lead single “Cubic Zirconia” for the emotionally-authentic piece of soft rock that it is with Katy Kirby’s close knit backstage pop-up performance. Watch the full session with Katy Kirby and keep up with all of our ACL pop-up performances at the link in bio! *Song of the Day is produced by @backhanderson.
