What if we add color? Transformative is a word we could use 😉 It might come as a shock to know that when we began in the planning, the original task was to design a Havana Nights themed white party for our clients. After a lot of research into the cuban culture, this was our response - and with permission (and excitement), we went into production of this very colorful cocktail hour + 5-course dinner + after party. A transformative evening that led to an all night birthday celebration 🎉 and day-after brunch. I remember being a tad filled with nerves when the time came to present our design ~ after all, we dove head first into designing the exact opposite of what we were asked. Though, before I lose you, there are two things you should know: 1. We always design to the space and to the people. Which requires listening more than we talk, so we pick up on subtleties, on the in-betweens. And while our clients may come to us with some color direction in mind, theres this world beyond "color" - its the 'why'. So we listen to why they want to celebrate, who they want to celebrate, and what this weekend will MEAN to them when its all said and done. 2. We get to know our clients pretty well. I've always said there's a bit of psychology that goes into how our designs come to life. Psychology and trust. I've spent years building our process to service and foster this relationship, so that its an exciting process you're excited to see unfold before your eyes and experience with your guests. Perhaps one of my favorite parts of this industry and specifically design is having the opportunity to work with our clients out of their home. Fall is right around the corner, and the cabin in Blue Ridge 🌲 is secured for TG (you guys - I'm excited). I've been dusting off all the fall recipes in preparation for the big day. My favorite place to be is in the kitchen or in the garden, so I like to start this process early, just at the cusp of fall. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Around this time of year, I begin trying out new recipes to see what I may be able to tweak for the week of Thanksgiving. This gives me lots of time to work out any kinks to get it just right or to scratch anything that just isn't what we'd hoped. Overall, I like to keep the mood the same while finding areas to play and get creative. The trick in our house is to stagger the really good stuff. So I plan a weeks worth of recipes and very intentionally make certain things for certain days leading up to the "finale". And I never have time for everything (my eyes are always bigger than everyone's belly's), but - it always works out because there are so many people, the extras just go home with everyone and we end up making the overflow part of the days after. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The hard part - everyone has a staple, the thing they *have* to have on the table. And it has to be made the same way - every time or it isn't "the same" which is a bigger disappointment than you might think. The entire meal might as well go in the trash if everyone's "something" isn't done just right. My husbands staple, his *must-have* is this recipe I've been making since before we started dating. It's a sausage and sage stuffing. Or as my Mama would say, "the dressing". The sausage, I use from a little farm in my hometown in NC. We grew up next door to the owners and it's quite literally the best I've ever managed to get my hands on, so we have it shipped. What do you want to be different because you gathered? A friend recently purchased the book 'Art of Gathering' and had it sent to my home. The quote above stuck out, it changed me for what I hope is the long run.
